I must confess....

My confession is that although I have a dozen basses, I just plain love my Squier Bronco bass with a Gretsch 2202 pickup in it.  This thing is light, balances well, holds tune, and sounds huge.  the satin finish poly neck is probably the most comfortable neck on any bass I own.  When I want a bass that I can play easily, this is the one I grab....neglecting my Gretsch 5123, '63 P, '64 EB-o and other worthy basses.

cool! love the v8 badge.do you know if that pickup uses polepieces or blades under the cover?
Louder bass!.

I don't - it's not one you can take apart without damage.  But it doesn't seem to be sensitive to string position, so I'm betting it's more like a blade design.

I suspect it's a blade too. You could always spread some iron filings on paper and hold the paper above the pickup. That should show if there's a polepiece pattern or just a line.

You can also use pin or small finish nail, etc.  Pole piece magnets will pull on it unequally as you slide it along the pup and when you let go it will home in on a magnet.  A small hunk of steel wool wrapped in plastic can also work.

I've heard a lot of good things about those p.u.s Is it possible to buy them somewhere (without a bass attached)?

I don'I know of any source other than take-outs when someone replaces a pickup with another style. I happen to have one that was taken out of a bass. PM me if interested.
