Time to get off the pot
« on: August 25, 2011, 01:40:39 PM »
Hey all -  I am cleaning up junk in my world, and need some advice.  I am wrapping up an 68 EB3, so I am wondering your thoughts on where best to score the following:

Rotary Switch
Pickguard
Wood rest thing

These need not be original, and in fact I prefer good looking and decent accuracy repros.  My wiring will be hot rodded, but I do want a switch that fits and works like the original.  I recall someone found them in Ontario maybe from Dudepit days.  I think fitting in the cavity is prime, and the 6 way Gibsons could work if a 4 way is too hard.

Guards are confusing. In days gone by I would think WD, but I don't buy guards that often.

The wood hook was around from the Kalamzoo storage score, but I don't see that anymore.

Thoughts?

GreatDealz still have the thumb rests & 6 way rotary switches listed, sniper is still selling repro varitone dial plates.

Quite a few people are selling repro pickguards on ebay,

I use to buy them from Chandler years ago.

I am going to pick up an oldie rest.  I have the a Mallory dial plate, and just bought a cut-down Mallory switch, so good to go there.

The pickguards are a concern.  I recall some downer reviews of the Jeanies pickguards from the old dudepit days.  I think I want a decent close enough guard, but would hate to pay a few bucks to get something that doesn't look good.  I have seen some crummy pickguards in the past.  I have had decent luck with WD for Fenderish stuff, but a 5-ply Gibson guard has more on the line, and they just don't do a lot of them in comparison.

I have had some rough waters over the past year, with death and dying in the family.  It makes one aware of projects hanging around.  I got rid of a few altogether, and want to actually finish this one up by October.  When the smoke clears, I will be around here more.

Sorry to hear about the personal misfortunes, Jim. I had noticed that you've been scarce around here this summer.
