Dark Stars and Fred
« on: June 22, 2011, 06:28:01 AM »
Fred is alive and doing well as he is returned from his self imposed sabatical (of which he did not elaborate and I didn't ask).

He is making pickups again and trying to stay focused without too much internet time causing any delays in his work. He says he will visit here soon.

That's really good to hear. You get to know these guys on the internet but never in person, yet you still feel the same sort of connection.

I have one of Fred's Dark Stars in my "Tractor" bass and am proud of his great work.

Fred's already a member here.

If he wants to explain his absence, I'm sure he will. Otherwise you were right not to ask. I figure most people will be happy that he's back, no matter the reason.

I've asked Fred a few question back in the DP days. He replied happily and frankly which I appreciated at the time. I've never tried his pups but admire how he has followed his dream. I agree it would be good to see him around again.

Fred is a really great and down to earth person. I have several basses rigged up with his DS's. In my last conversation with him several years ago he was quite proud and humbled that Jack Casady had ordered one of his pick ups and put it in an Epi SG. He sent Fred a letter back saying how much he liked it and it was a keeper. This we have to remember was from Jack Casady, the original King of modded basses himself.  We had a joke one time that all the EPI JC owners who had put DS's in their basses would go to one of Jack's bass camps and give him a taste of his own medicine! Anyhow real glad to know that Fred is back in 'orbit'.

Maybe he guessed my hidden project to duplicate the Dark Star pickup! I am trying to do something similar to Dark Star, but with some significant modification, hopefully in better. However that pickup is a great piece of engineering
