Most read people in Oz seemed to have heard of her and her books. I certainly had by my late teens during high school. Her books fall into that category of meant to read them but never quite got there for me. I understand her basic philosophical viewpoint just by listening to others conversations. I like to read different religious and political veiwpoints just to feel I have a better understanding of things. Just like my wife said "you dont have the right to refer to Independence day as the worst movie ever made when you have only watched the last 10 minutes". I forced myself to watch the entire 145 minutes before declaring that yes it indeed was the worst movie I have ever seen.

You haven't seen Roland Emmerich's other horrible stuff yet - things like The Patriot (a film documenting British atrocities that never happened), 10.000 B.C. (come back Raquel Welch - even with a tail - all is forgiven and forgotten) or Godzilla (how to animate a creature for millions of Dollars yet still leave it devoid of any real life). Independence Day is together with  The 13th Floor (but he only produced it, didn't direct it, so it doesn't really count) Emmerich's Citizen Kane.  

Roland has done loads for a balanced perception of gay men - he is living proof that you can be gay and have no artisitic talent or merit whatsoever.

I have actually seen 13th floor but have only a vague recollection of it. More quirky and a lot less predictable than ID from memory. I was going to start making comparisons but ID fails on so many levels that I wont bother

Became aware of Rand via Rush when I was a young teen.
Have read most of her work and while I have reservations concerning aspects of her viewpoints, the more I watch what is happening in the world and especially in American society, I begin to think she was a prophetess.

I enjoyed Independance Day, and several of his other movies (Stargate, 2012, Day After Tommorrow) - I get disaster movies - a big fave of mine is Deep Impact... probably says a lot...

13th Floor is a brilliant movie; simply brilliant...

I dislike every movie I have seen by Emmerich.   I was actually stunned at how bad "The Patriot" was, though.  I will attempt to avoid all his movies in the future.

I thought The Patriot repulsive. It made the British Army look like rampaging Nazis. Utter a-historical bollocks.
