I'd rather see parents spend more and get a real instrument instead.

And $$ music lessons & the torture of them practicing / making them practice...

Hopefully it would be on an instrument the kid likes instead of one the parent chooses.

I couldn't agree more with both of your comments on this. A toy is just a toy. If a child has a real intrest it's a good thing to help him develop that intrest with something more than just a toy.

$20 generally ain't going very far in music lessons or towards an instrument. If I understand correctly, it's a toy beatbox. Those are a lot of fun, even for adults, and would be instrumental in both kindling a child's interest in his own rhythm and giving him the immediate satisfaction of composition that would require more than just a cursory familiarity with a 'proper' instrument. It's the digital equivalent of a set of pots and pans to bang on. I would see something like this toy more as a way of sparking a child's interest in music who otherwise might not be physically capable of playing. I encourage you guys to go into the DJ sections of your music stores and try the beat machines out for yourselves. They're much more than just drum sequencers.

I have this Korg Electribe thing that my 5yr old son loves.  That's one of those DJ beat boxes/synths/sequencer all-in-one type of deals.  He can run circles around me on it ;D  That's what this toy kinda reminds me of.

It's funny what sparks their interest.  I don't think the Electribe did it, but I give him some music to play in his little CD radio.  One of the songs I put on a disc for him was Eleanor Rigby - some remixed version from the "Love" CD with just solo strings at the intro.  I kept hearing him play just that part over and over and over again, and about a week later he began asking if he could take violin lessons.  This was a couple months back.  Last week someone gives me an old Solina string ensemble keyboard, and Mike was there for a good hour playing the thing when I fired it up.  Not just banging around, but intently working out his little song and everything (he had to make it a point to play it for me once he had it "there"  :)).  I've got keys all over the house, and he never shows any interest in them.  Then I realized it was the "violin"-ish sound he liked.  I gotta get him hooked up with some lessons soon so he can explore that.

Funny what makes 'em tick!  (and figures they're only interested in playing instruments I don't already have!  ;D)
