I saw this movie with Harvey Keitel way back when and remember the "Group" in the movie was EWF.  I was always interested in Verdine's bass because he was using his late 60's Telecaster bass but it had been modded with a humbucker and added Jazz pickup.  I finally gave in and rented it on Netflix and lo and behold the bass was modded with a Gibson Mudbucker in the original single coil position and then the added Jazz pickup in the regular location.  He also did some funky stuff with the original control plate.  I took a photo off of the TV as I cannot find any images of this bass on the web.  He started using his Jazz bass not too long after, but the Tele bass can be seen in the photo collage in the gatefold of their Gratitude LP.  I have a closeup I'll post later of the Mudbucker that has black electrical tape on one side and masking tape on the other side appearing to hold the pickup on the bass!  :o

Closeup of Verdine's Telecaster bass.  Note the 2 types of tape!  This is the bass used to record Shining Star!  I was wondering how he got that phat tone on that track.

a tele with a humbucker, phat tone is a given.

Good job with the forensics.  The tape shot is very cool.
