Rock music history in my backyard
« on: May 17, 2010, 09:21:53 PM »
On Sunday my Stones tribute band is hosting a charity event in conjunction with the release of the remastered Exile On Main Street to raise funds for the Fred Hollows Foundation.  There are a number of cool aspects of this gig -

1. We're playing the 1972 US tour set list in full
2. Universal Music have donated 4 copies of the Exile CD as raffle prizes
3. Ampeg is providing the backline - three SVT-VR heads and SVT-VR 810 cabs

and the big one .....

4. Sam Cutler will be present, to talk about his book "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and take questions from the audience in between the support bands, plus donate 2 signed copies of the book as raffle prizes.  Sam lives in Australia these days, and was tour manager for the Stones and the Grateful Dead.  He was the main organiser for the free concert in Hyde Park just after Brian Jones died (Mick Taylor's first gig), was one of the organisers for the Altamont concert, and arranged the involvement of the Grateful Dead on the Festival Express tour (among other things).

I just hope he has enough brain cells left to be able to share his memories of those times with us!
Cheers
Mark

The Faces and The Stones were so cool in the seventies: Ampeg SVTs plus 8x10s for bass, guitar and keys!!  ;D

Ah, you'll play Midnight Rambler and your singer will have to take off his leather jacket (yet keep the blue eye shadow intact) and whip himself with his belt!!!

Sounds like a fun gig!  My first ever concert was The Stones in June '75.  Ronnie Wood's first tour with them.

Sam donated two signed copies of his book for the charity raffle.  My wife won one copy!

I had the opportunity to have a decent one on one chat with Sam early in the night when one of the support bands was on, and he's a very nice guy as well as still being passionate about music after all these years in the industry.

Obligatory crappy cell phone photo of Sam with 3 of the guys in our band .....

Cheers

How did the gig bit go...?

Went really well.  The venue was a small inner city pub, so 150 people is standing room only.  The crowd really got into it.  Our set list .....

Brown Sugar
Bitch
Gimme Shelter
Rocks Off
Ventilator Blues
Tumbling Dice
Love In Vain
Sweet Virginia
You Cant Always Get What You Want
All Down the Line
Midnight Rambler
Bye Bye Johnny
Rip This Joint
Jumping Jack Flash
Street Fighting Man

Honky Tonk Women
Satisfaction

The drummer's sister filmed the whole set, and we have a CD taken straight off the mixing desk, so we'll see what we can put together for sharing.  We played as a 7 piece with sax and keyboards, and I borrowed a Dan Armstrong Plexi reissue LOL
Cheers

I narrowly missed buying a DA Plexi back in the early eighties - just love the pose quality...

Small venue, hot nite, great atmosphere, beer... 'e by 'eck, we all asked fer more...  ;)
