Bad news always comes in threes

The three rule seems to strike again.

My uncle who battled prostate cancer twice and beat it both times, died last week at 83 from kidney failure, he had been in hospice for sometime so was not too unexpected. As a matter of fact it took so long for him to go they kicked him out of hospice!

Yesterday, I get two calls, one I find out my cousin, who was 50, was found dead in his bed and the other is my sister, has discovered she has some form of blood cancer, either bone, lymphoma or a combination of both. They still have to determine what form it is and how to treat it. The good news is it looks like hey caught it early. The bad news is it's incurable and they can treat it and it will go in remission, but will come back. She is in her late 60's.

I talked to her yesterday and she seems to be in good spirits. One of the first things out of her mouth was her wondering if she can afford fighting it financially.

I am going to northern Michigan next week for a get away. No phone service, TV or internet.

That's tough, John, sorry to hear. With your uncle you can at least console yourself that leaving with 83 is not being torn out of "the middle of life". And your sister is younger, so she can expect many more years, yet at the same time she is old enough to not have the type of rampant cell growth young people have and which renders that type of cancer so dangerous for them. Once your closing in on seventy, many types of cancer are still nothing to rejoice about, but they will not win the race of killing you, you'll more likely die from other causes.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, John. My sister died from Multiple Myeloma a few years ago at age 54. She fought it for over 11 years and was able to raise her two sons before it took her. Here's hoping that your sister will have plenty of time before she moves on. Best wishes to you and your family.

Her diagnosis is a form of Lymphoma. Next they are going to decide how best to fight it.
