Bought a Grabber
« on: June 22, 2009, 05:10:54 PM »
Probably paid a bit too much but I wanted another one after selling my old one several years ago.  Can anyone guess why I may have paid a bit more for it?  (Uwe will know)

Skunk strip.

We have a winner!  Uwe does have one of these but his is Pelham Blue with a black finished neck.  The skunk stripe Grabbers are pretty rare.  I've only seen 2 in person and both were mine.  They have a cool straight headstock with a F#nder type nut and adjustment screw under the truss rod cover.  Here is a photo of my old one's headstock.

And here is a photo of a famous user.  ;D

I didn't really know that the skunk stripes were more desirable, but they are certainly rare, you don't see a lot of them. Congrats!

I just like the look of the skunk stripes.  Plus they seem more stable than the 2 piece scarf joint necks on the typical Grabbers.  That pic of Gene was from the original booklet that came with the Kiss Alive LP.

I didn't know the skunkies did not have a scarfed neck? I can't tell on mine because the neck is black-finned with just a little worn off in the middle to reveal the stripe. Makes sense though from the neck/headstock construction, I just never gave it a real thought. Thanks for elucidating!

One piece neck just like on those, uh, what are they called.......Fender Basses!  ;)

I wrote a letter to Vintage Guitar Magazine's "Ask Gruhn" back around 2000 or so and he and Walter Carter had not ever heard of such a beast.  They wanted me to send better photo's to them but I don' think I was able to do so because of my ancient camera.  I really need to get a better one someday....
