It might have been used as a tester, like for pickups and preamps. Or a mad scientist could have gotten hold of it.

As bad as that is the first thing that came to mind was Scott's splinter of a Thunderbird that he built up into the bass in the video he posted. Obviously it would have to be a labor of love, but he pulled it off with less than that poor 4003.

That was my guess, looks like battery compartments cut, maybe some effects to go into it? Mad scientist realised he'd dropped a bollock and parted all the hardware out to cut his losses.
