Congrats Rob, Chris and Blazer
« on: June 06, 2009, 08:37:10 AM »
Hey congrats guys on the Netherlands beating England in the 20/20 Cricket world cup opener.
And by 4 wickets too. If Pakistan beats England in their next game (which is possible), they are out of the World Cup.

Cricket is not a popular sports game over here in The Netherlands.
Nothing like soccer, (field) hockey or speed skating on ice.
You hardly ever see anything about it on TV or the papers.

But thank you anyway Bret  ;) :toast:

Most of the time, Dutch teams just spit on their opponents ...

Thanks! I hope Gibson will reissue an orange 20/20 now!

Cricket. As an Anglophile I once spent three afternoons watching cricket, but I still didn't get it. If I thought they made a good hit, nothing happens and when I thought it was a bad hit people start running and shouting. A Dutch comedy programm called Jiskefet once made an episode of 'English sports' with totally not understandable things.

Test cricket is like a 5 day game of chess using physical talent to move the pieces. Like chess it can be played simply or to a level totally off the planet. Test cricket is not really a game that you sit and watch for 5 days. You pick your "Session" to go to the ground. Ie when your team starts batting etc.  Millions or rules and variations on those rules. A lifetime to learn.

20Twenty cricket is more akin to Baseball in a Cricket format.  Anyway the Dutch have been one of the very few teams who have been good enough to consistently qualify for World cups and beat some of the big gun teams.

I can understand if you guys are not into it but be aware that your country's team has a lot of respect from the more powerful teams. And rightly so, they played well. Even if the Poms make excuses  ;)

Ah... cricket... I used to play tennis...  ;)

The other team that gets due respect is Ireland. They did very well at the last One Day World Cup. I just saw where they are through to the final 8.  Australia was beaten by Sri Lanka and is now out of the competition. I dont mind losing to them as they are my favourite team other than Australia.  They are as good or better than the best teams in the world like India, England, South Africa and Australia. They have one of the best win loss records for playing India in India which is probably the hardest thing in world cricket to do. Their players have always been humble and polite yet awesome cricketers. Australias Shane Warne is probably recognised as the greatest bowler of all time yet Sri Lanka's Muralitharan has taken more wickets. Sanath Jayasuriya would be in my top 5 batsmen of all time. Fantastic to watch bat.

Here is a wiki snippet:

Sri Lanka won the 1996 Cricket World Cup, beating Australia in the finals, and becoming World Champions. Since then, the team has continued to be a major force in international cricket. Sri Lankan team currently holds several word records including world records for highest team totals in all three forms of the game, Test, ODI and, Twenty20. The Sri Lanka team did well to reach the finals of the 2007 Cricket World Cup but lost to Australia in a rain-affected match. The batting of Sanath Jayasuriya and Aravinda de Silva (retired), backed up by the bowling of Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas, among many other talented cricketers, has underpinned the successes of Sri Lankan cricket.

Considering that back in March this year the team was attacked by gunmen in Lahore, Pakistan. At least six security personnel were killed and eight members of Sri Lanka's cricket team hurt including two with gunshot wounds in an attack on the team's bus as they were going to play a game. These guys have not played a game since that day until they beat Australia yesterday.
