Big Quake "Guaranteed" to Hit California by 2037
« on: April 15, 2008, 06:28:53 AM »
Mom always warned me about moving to California!

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/04/080414-AP-earthquake.html

The report "basically guarantees it's going to happen," said Ned Field, a USGS seismologist based in Pasadena and lead author of the study.

New calculations reveal there is a 99.7 percent chance a magnitude 6.7 quake or larger will strike in the next 30 years.

I find your lack of economic enthusiasm in all this defeatist. Look at it this way, post 2037, the construction industry will be having a heyday, people will take up cheap loans for cheap real estate again and someone will "package" the debt for the finance markets. It's all good.

I just hope there will be enough advance notice of the location that we can make sure all the paparazzi and obnoxious reporters will be at the epicenter.

If LA fell into the ocean would anyone be unhappy?

When in LA,  (I go there once a year) I have never seen so many artificially built women, that are just unnatural, from the lips to the boobs. I do notice you are starting to see the cosmetic surgery boom hit Chicago. Our family's skin Dr says her largest business is Botox injections.

I did not see many artificial women life forms in London. Maybe the "cosmetic" surgery binge is only a US thing?

It's growing in Europe too, make no mistake. We're generally five to 10 years behind you.

What I can't really understand how these people think they look better?

They look like freak goldfish.

You hear how kids get a boob or nose job for their graduation present.

Well the big quake hasn't happened yet and is probably still long off but there was a 5.4 quake in Chino Hills around noon.

Was sitting talking to my mom as she had just heard from the car dealership about her car when the floor started to feel like there were waves under it.
There are many in this world that call me Darrol, feel free to be apart of that group.

30 years from now I more than likely won't have to worry about it.

Many experts have said The Big One will hit by 2010..... then there's all this talk about doomsday 2012.
It's gonna be a lot bigger than 6.7 I think. The Northridge quake was 6.7 & that was reported this way:
"This is not The Big One, folks. This is just a little side fault that we forgot even existed."

Another side fault line is the Newport-Inglewood fault line....about 50 miles long.
Here's a possible scenario if that one should slip, registering 8.3 on the Richter scale:

http://home.earthlink.net/~thepotstirer/id6.html

I'm wondering if or WHEN the San Andreas fault line causes The Big One....
What will it register on the Richter scale? A 9 maybe?
It might even break the record of the 1960 Chile quake which was 9.5 !!!
The San Andreas fault line runs the length of California--about 800 miles!!!!!!!!
There are nuclear power plants built right on it tooo

Something for us Californians & visitors coming here to think about.

Who knows? I'd like to stay in SoCal a few more years & then retire to Hawaii.
Earthquakes in Hawaii sometimes make lava flow tho!

How many of you have heard of the New Madrid fault and the great New Madrid (Missouri) quakes of late 1811 and early 1812? The last of that series was much bigger than the great San Francisco quake and the damage covered a much larger area. With the population many times greater today, the next one of that size will make Hurricane Katrina look like a picnic. Yet a lot of people living in the fault area aren't even aware of it.
