Egads, perhaps this perversion of the language can be expected on a site like Engadget.

I suspect that what this doohickey (sorry, it's German, should probably be a "hickeymitdogoodness") will do is simply put the vehicle into test mode so that the emissions are corrected.

If it's not doing something like this, why wouldn't VW have already been installing this $.99 part in every diesel's air path?

And perhaps Uwe can favor us with a more authentic sounding made-up 12-syllable German term for the aforementioned doohickey?  Could be fun!

Does that fix apply to North American markets?  I was reading some comments that indicate it might take more to satisfy US EPA regulations... but haven't seen anything definitive.

Also, Audi has "Truth in Engineering".

As I read it, that does apply in the US. The European-made diesel engines are the ones that violated the EPA emission standards in the US.

That's about right. I've seen reports of settlements where the lawyers get sometimes upwards of $100 million and class members get $5 vouchers.
