A friend of mine had one just like that, though I think she may have put a Duncan pup on it. It was OK, but the neck was like a baseball bat.

You say it like it's a negative thing...  ;)

Well you can shave the neck profile down. As long as the width ( and I know that is sometimes an issue for some depending on your hands) is not a problem you won't have to do fret work.

Ha!

The width seemed normal, it was just really round and fat front to back.

Sounds right to me.  It's supposed to be a  Classic Vibe '50s isn't it?

...You young pups, why in my day the necks had bark on them.

My early/mid-'70s Telecaster Bass has a fat neck - baseball-bat-sawn-in-half is always how I thought of it! I love it - I definitely play differently on it. My Duck Dunn Sig plays the role of the flatwound-strung P for me now.

Just bought my son a new Classic Vibe 60's Jazz bass (for a Xmas present). Amazing bass for the money!

I'd like to see them extend the series by adding more instruments and finishes to it.

Nice! I've never played a 50s Fender, but I played a '57 re-issue a few years ago, and the neck was nice and flat. I don't usually care for P necks, but that one was great.

57 is when they switched to a shallower neck profile, still the same width as the 51s, 1 3/4".  The 'Tele" bass reissue of the 60s had the same baseball bat as the 51 thru 56s.  Mine was a '55, contoured body, weighed less than 8 lbs.

I was in love with one of these at the House of Guitars. Beautiful flamed maple neck, yeah it was beefy but in a good way and the LP blue finish looked killer. The fit and finish were excellent, you wouldn't know you were playing a $300 bass.
