Does any of you guys know what kind of wood the thin plate between the mahogany front and back of a seventies Les Paul Bass is?

Could it be that it's just a mahogany veneer with the grain turned 90° ?

I checked 'The Modern Era of the Les Paul Legacy 1968-2009' and it said 'the larger 13 7/8" body continued to utilze the customary 1/16" mahogany cross-band strip' for the LP Professional guitar.  the book doesn't mention how the LP Bass model is constructed, unfortunately.  it's mentioned on page 40 if you have access to the book.

nofi

a recent tv show on gibson shows a guy 'turning the grain' on a les paul. fwiw.

Thanx. That answers my question.
The body of the Les Paul Bass is identical to the body of a Les Paul Professional (as far as I know)
