Vintage Icon VJ96 "Jaco" bass

My bass-playing son (who already has an '86 Ric 4003S/BT) really wants a fretless. He listens a lot to Jaco. He borrows my '75/'77 Jazz, but it's fretted.

So today I bought this for him... UKP240. Now the wait. This will be his 15th b-day present. I hope he likes it. Has anyone here played one of these?

I have never played one myself, but I have read good things about it on the Basschat forum. It seems to be very good for the money. It would be the first bass I would try out myself if I would want a fretless.

I tried some Vintage basses. Like them! A bit like the better/more expensive Squiers. Maybe even better because of the Wilkonson hardware. I only dislike the relic a bit, cos I saw some Vintages with clear coating over the relic. But a very nice gift!

Excellent. When it arrives I plan to install TI flats and give it a good set-up before we give it to him.

Got the bass this morning.

Setup is excellent, I pulled out my tools but didn't need to tweak anything, just remove the crappy roundwounds that were on it and put TI flats on. With the TI's, it sounds really nice.

The kid was very excited. In the pic he's texting his friends about it.

It could use better tuners, but they function. The relic job - I've seen more realistic relics, but for UKP 240, I'm satisfied.

The fingerboard edges are too sharp for my taste. But that's an easy fix.

The back of the neck is relic'ed too - smooth and fast.
