AC/DC bass
« on: March 22, 2012, 05:32:45 PM »

Mark Evans commenting on this pic:

The bass is a Gibson L9 S, called The Ripper. Great bass, very underestimated, loads of growl. Had a varitone switch which gave you 4 pickup options, 3 sucked, one sounds HUGE.

He's playing it in "Long way to the top" but you only catch the occasional short glimpse, that's a cool bass, I really like the burst.

Possibly the most beautiful Ripper of all time. Videos of it in action posted here:

What does this pic with those ugly grand dads from Rose Tattoo have to do with the Ripper from Mark Evans of AC/DC?
(Apart from being used in an Australian rock band)

Mark Evans still has that cherryburst Ripper, and plays it regularly in his blues duo here in Sydney with Dave Tice (ex Buffalo frontman)
Cheers

The official reason they gave Evans for firing him from the three chord wonders was that his backing vocals were not up to par. Not that I would regard his successor to be in the Timothy B. Schmidt league though!

I saw AC/DC with Evans at the time opening for Rainbow. He probably played the Ripper but I have no recollection. I remember three things from that concert, a) I thought them hopeless (and so did the Rainbow audience), dead-certain they would go nowhere,  b) the singer carried the tiny guitarist on his back and c) the only song remotely approaching having a chorus was It's a Long Way to the Top. German rock critics chided them as "poor man's Status Quo" at the time, but I thought that was unfair to Quo who had better melodies and a smoother, less heavy-handed groove.
