I've always liked Wanda Jackson, shame her 60s straight country stuff is often overlooked. However, though I hate to say it, I saw that Letterman performance and I felt embarrassed for her. Way overblown production and she wasn't in good form at all. And what's the deal with Jack White?

jack is the new cheryl crow apparently, he's everywhere.

That album is out for a year or so? Jack produced it.

He produced Loretta Lynn's album a few years back too. And made a big point about how he was behind it, just as with Wanda Jackson. While I appreciate his effort to shine a little more light on them, IMHO he doesn't add anything by performing with them besides calling attention to himself.

The Loretta Lynn album I found credible - this here is embarrassingly painful or the other way around. Wanda is an old lady now and she can't keep time with the music anymore, perhaps her hearing, nerves or not having done it for a very long time. She's so off beat in her singing it's disconcerting - ouch.

White is probably sincere in his necrophilic desire

to drag all these long forgotten stars back into the spotlight to give their careers some kind of befitting closure, but he is not always doing them a favor, certainly not Wanda here. Not everyone is a Rick Rubin, not everyone a Johnny Cash.

Some things should not be unearthed.

Agreed, some still have it, some don't.

Speaking of which, Carole King was guest performer on the Today show 2 or 3 days ago. She looked pretty good for her age, not frail at all, her performance was energetic and not embarrassing, but she just couldn't reach the high notes. Then I left the TV on until the local weather, and there was an old lady with bad plastic surgery talking about St. Jude's childhood cancer research. I suddenly realized it was Marlo Thomas. Ugh, what a sad spectacle. I've seen worse plastic surgery, but still it was sad to see "That Girl" looking like that.

OTOH, Connie Smith's new album is great, she still sounds pretty much like she did when I first heard her in 1964. And she's looking good at age 70.

+1 on Connie Smith's new record. She looks great for 70. I learned on the Wiki that she's married to Marty Stuart, who is 53.

He has told the story that when he was young -- like maybe in his teens -- he said he was going to marry her someday. They started working together musically in the mid 90s, and next thing you know, it came true.

Connie's and Wanda's performances are lightyears apart.
