Here's an interesting article on "Clay Dots"and speculation as to the originals.  According to this they were a material similar to water putty.

Cool stuff. The only thing I had previously heard/read on the subject was the myth that Leo used floor tile. I'm now an expert on the subject.  Thanks for posting gentlemen!
