They're great basses, but they do pop up on Ishibashi and eBay Japan for around $600 fairly regularly

Yes indeedy! I was surfing Ishibashi's site yesterday evening and there are a few in the $600 range. There were a fair number of older Gibbys as well.
Nothing is what it seems but everthing is exactly what it is.
