I knew a mechanic back in the '70s who was a wizard, but had some substance abuse problems.  One day, he drove one Jaguar XKE that he was repairing in his garage into another XKE that was parked inside.  Twice.  His partner had warned him that the brakes were bad, AND that the throttle was sticking.

I don't feel so bad now about launching my soon-to-be brother-in-law's '72 Pinto off a local freeway on ramp a couple months after getting my license!

You may have saved him from an incendiary death!

Next time he gives me a hard time about it I'll remember to remind him of this fact.

I nearly rolled my parents Pinto on my first solo flight.  :o :o

And then there's this.....

Highlander

I was in a van that was side-swiped once... came out the screen and my back was scraped across the ground as the van was thrown over - when it all came to a stop, my back was on the ground and my body from the waist down was on the van roof... the van ended up upside down, on the path on the opposite side of the road, nearly facing the direction I'd come from, after rolling partially across the roof of the sports model car that drove straight into my passenger door at a crossroads - both vehicles were brand new '87 - both were totalled - the chassis on the van was so twisted it could only sit on three wheels... the van was a UK badged Isuzu and the car was a Ford XR2i

not a great shot - I took this not knowing that the camera was wrecked and it was dusk... you can just make out the car to the left, the contents of my van and SLD in the middle the the rear of the van leaning against a wall to the left - there are some clear (local rag) newspaper shots I have but have never scanned...

This is what was left of the car - I went to the yard to check if anything was left in the van as so many people helped clear the debris from the road (ie helped themselves to my tools, as most had gone missing...!)

This was taken the day after - a fireman and an ambulance man both questioned me as to my comments re "walked away" with disbelief and one made a comment that the he'd never seen someone walk away from one as bad as this; the other agreed...

A comment was made later by a friend... "Someone's watching out for you..."

I can't argue that...

Staring at that event horizon is a dirty job, but someone has to do it; something's going to come back out of it one day...

Very fortunate, Ken.

My older son did manage to drive a car through our garage door once, but it was the 12 year old Chevy Caprice we had given him. The door suffered far worse damage than the car.
