There's a '91 4003S MG/BT that looks really nice on GBase, from Southside Guitars - asking $1,800 which isn't cheap but isn't outrageous either for a neck-thru S model.

No affiliation, just a heads-up.

Somebody grab it. That is THE bass from THE era - great necks, strong pickups. And none of that fancy binding or big inlay stuff.  :P IMHO of course. I've got a '89 S. Far from stock, but still.....

I have an '93 S (4003S) which is on the edge of being too wide neckwise in my opinion. Still on the right side of the edge though but If I find an '86 S while I have money to spend it may leave.

You guys are giving me serious Ricwood here. That is one of my favorite looking basses of all time. I finally found a nice copy a while back (I can't spring for a real one at this point) but threads like this keep me hoping to get one one of these days.

I've got an 8-string S, so I shouldn't feel too jealous!

Do 4001s basses (and 4003s) typically have neck-through?  In other words, if you came across a 4001s with a glued neck is it really a converted 4000?

Most of them are neck-thru but some set-neck 4001S's were shipped like that from the factory. I don't have the production numbers or time frame. Of course there are other set-neck 2-pickup basses out there that are 4000's modded by their owners.

This is the one that I found on gbase.  If I hit the lottery this weekend I will buy it, but I wonder if it is a done up 4000.

A pic under the pickguard could help determine.

Now, I have heard that many 4000 basses have a pup rout under there as well.  True?

I've heard that too but have never seen one like that.
