We have a retired criminal here called Chopper Read who is famous for being "Hard as nails" and not beating around the bush with his opinions. He is most famous for cutting his ears off and secondly for suggesting that Australians Harden the F**k up.

There is also a Comedy Show called the Ronnie Johns half hour where Chopper gets lauded as one of their characters.

Here is one of their skits about Airport security.

* I dont recommend this be opened at work or near kids or people with delicate ears

Oz humour could never be described as being subtle, A Bret...?

A question my Antipodean cuzzie... have you ever heard of the "farting competion" ("little threep", tripple flutterbalst", & "struth, he's thrown mud...") and who was it by... lost it years back...

Staring at that event horizon is a dirty job, but someone has to do it; something's going to come back out of it one day...

J.P. Donleavy's The Unexpurgated Code: A Complete Manual of Survival & Manners has a nice subchapter on farts. A must read for any would-be gentleman.

Cant say I recognise that  quote Ken.

Although subtlety in comedy or humor is subjective. I would say that Aussie humor is really quite subtle. the most common form of comedian humor here (it seems to me) works on the build up, the titillate and the Bludgeoning punchline like most types of humor. A great deal of Aussie humor has this standard theme but with 2 underlying parts. Big dollops of Irony (something without which most Australians wont laugh) and the classic Double entendre.
So, like a lot of English comedy we will laugh even longer and louder if its clever enough to combine the 3 aspects.
English comedy is probably closest to Australian comedy than any other culture.
