the JJ stuff is really good. better than the 90's Dano's. i don't know about recent stuff though

I've played a few (never owned one). To me, they're way nicer sounding than the Dano reissues. That's to be expected at the price.

Leftybass may own one or more JJs, I can't remember for sure.

I've got a couple JJones basses and an electric sitar. Very nice instruments and better quality than original or reissue Danos. IMO.

I might be tempted if that UK auction doesn't attract too much interest. The thing that worries me about longhorns generally is it looks like it would be easy to snap one of the horns, though I've never heard of that happening.

Masonite top and bottom over a poplar frame, just like the originals.

Never heard of that happening either.

I believe the horns are solid wood. I read somewhere that JJs (like the original Danos) are made from a rectangular frame and then shaped, and that on a Longhorn the outer frame members extend up to make the horns -- i.e. they're part of the structure, not an add-on. However, I've never seen one apart so I can't vouch for this.

Then again, it seems like Masonite has it's own special mojo. Why mess with it.

The masonite has its own tone-for better or worse...hollowish but not nearly as hollow as something like a Hofner

I doubt he ever considered going with anything else but Masonite. The whole idea was to have a modern version of the originals, not just a copy of the body styles like Hondo did in the 80s.

It looks like they've really gone up more than the normal inflation rate in the past 3 or 4 years.

I love the sound of old Danos Hofners, on the other hand never did a thing for me
