for the aircraft enthusiasts: the century fighters

The name stems from a series of early US supersonic jet fighters built for the United States Air Force during the 1950s and early 1960s whose designation number lay in the 100 and above range. The designation system was of the then-new USAF, but the number series stretched back to the 1920s as it was used for the former P- series (pursuit aircraft). In 1962 the fighter number sequence was reset under the 1962 United States Tri-Service aircraft designation system.

Here's the list of them complete, including the ones that were never built.

The North American F100 Super sabre

The McDonnell F101 Voodoo

The Convair F102 Delta Dagger

The Republic F103 Thunderwarrior

The Lockheed F104 Starfighter

The Republic F105 Thunderchief

The Convair F106 Delta dart

The North American F107 Ultra sabre

The North American F108 Rapier

The Bell F109

The McDonnel F110 Spectre (AKA the F4C Phantom)

And last but far from least...

The General Dynamics F111 Aardvark

When you think about it, some of the worst aircraft ever produced. My favorites were the Crusader, the Thundercheif and the ill fated Starfighter.

Probably the best was the B-52 who is one of if not "the" the longest flying aircraft ever.

can we talk about battleships now.... The New Jersey being brought out of mothballs was really cool.

Nah, that honor goes to THIS one...

which after seventy years is still in use by airforces across the globe.

The F-105 is my fave of the fighters, I have distinct recollection of F-102's and 106's tho....
In 1964 my grandparents moved from northeastern Washington to Tacoma, very near the north end of McChord AFB, the Cold War was in full swing and I can vividly recall pairs of fighters scrambling with afterburners on screaming over the house. This was in addition to the endless parade of C-119 flying boxcars, C-131 Globemasters and the then new C-141 Starlifters..............Noise abatement was unheard (bad pun) of.

the CF105 Avro Arrow could have been a century fighter if it had survived the politics but sometimes the "if" factor can be very big to overcome.
