Is this common? I kinda like it, bit I don't think I've ever seen it before.

Hmmm.. to me it looks like like any other pearl inlay, where you see the edges around the putty/filler?

Yes, it's a square piece of m.o.p with rounded of edges.
And it was sprayed black with the E masked off.
This method is much easier than cutting the inlay plus chamber to a complicated shape.
