Gibson Basses / Re: '64 TBird II unbroken at Norms

It also sounds/looks like he's palm muting a lot. Unusual to see that with fingerstyle, I think I would find it difficult. Clearly he's a good player.
I also love the middy roar of a bird with roundwounds, but they do sound nice with darker tones like rolling off the tone control.

RIP Tina. I am truly saddened by her loss. One of a kind, she earned her legendary status.
So much drama in her voice. She was like an actor-singer.

I always liked this song from the 80s (here the tempo is rather amped up but it seems to work in a stadium)

RIP Tina. A legendary performer. Powerful, charismatic, beautiful. She was larger than life and I just assumed she'd live forever.

Very sad.  A couple years ago Kate Bush's live "Before the Dawn" set was my most-listened album. He plays great with Omar Hakim on that.

I used to have that "my amp is essential" feeling, but sometime in the past decade or so it totally shifted.

What happened was, I started playing Gibson-style basses that have a big growly midrange and a subdued high end.  First I got the Greco bird clone, then I got the LPB-1 which is still my favorite sound of the bunch, though lately I'm playing the single-pickup DC tribute junior a lot.
All of these, especially the LP, give me a direct sound that I like, even with no EQ. In fact, it's almost hard for an engineer to screw it up, even if I dislike their EQ choices.

I used to hate going direct, because I was playing through 12" drivers that had the typical huge presence peak and no treble above about 5k, like a guitar amp; and I was playing an Ibanez with Alembic active pickups to get the brightness I wanted, which meant that if I went direct there was suddenly a lot of very obnoxious sizzle in the top octave and it just sounded awful. I hated bass cabs with tweeters, especially because so many of them frankly had terrible tweeters so they weren't even good full-range speakers.

So I relied on the speakers as a big part of my EQ, and would always beg the FOH guy to mic my amp, and if they refused (which they often did in the low-end clubs I played; those guys are paid almost nothing and they just don't want anything that adds hassle to their night) ... then I would have to warn them about the distortion pedal and beg them to turn down the treble, which just sounded bad.

Life is so much easier now and I like my sound better.

My current preamp (Genz-benz shuttle) adds a little growly saturation, which is like the icing on top - I love it, but I can get by fine without it, and there are lots of other amps and/or plugins and DIs  that work well too.  I'm thinking of trying to find a pedal that does something similar for me when I go direct or use a house amp.

It's difficult to separate given the number of high-profile co-writers, but I have the impression that Taylor Swift is a really substantial songwriter.

Jawohl Herrn Gibsonobergruppenführer!  :toast:

I guess adding the extra fret can be done.
I'll send a PM.

but I'd like to hear what else that bass can do

Here's something... Still very bright and almost all with a pick, but at least he solos the individual pickups about 10 minutes in... with a very weird attempt at fingerstyle played right on the bridge after that :o ... and then finally turns the tone down around 12 minutes.

Yeah speaking of Alembic, I thought the prices on Alembic Activator pickups/electronics were crazy.
Here's $949 US for a J set with controls.

I think the equivalent Alembic P/J Activator set in my ancient Ibanez cost me under $300, even accounting for price increase between 1986ish when I bought the P with active vol and tone, and ten years later when I added the J pickup and blend control.

Gibson Basses / Re: Gibson vs. Dean update

I recently picked up a UniVox Mosrite copy , a HiFlier. And it’s a lot better than I originally expected , aside from one slippy tuner. It sounds really good. But I suppose I’m guilty of playing cheap basses through really nice amps.

I love that approach. Cheap instruments through nice amps is a great way to get cool sounds!

I used to own a Univox Moserite short-scale copy too. It was a great little bass, but I bought it with a specific hacky modification in mind...
I put a cheap guitar bridge and slotted a nut for 6 strings and hacked some guitar tuners onto the headstock, dropped a P90 copy on sale into the bridge pickup, and basically turned it into a baritone (though I strung it and tuned it differently than most).
This was in the 90s when baritone guitars barely existed, and a Fender Bass VI was out of my budget. The Univox cost me maybe $300 USD.
I did a terrible job, but I got a lot of mileage out of that instrument.

How do all the strat-like guitars exist?

Sure, there are minor differences - to me, akin to the visual differences between a Gibson flying V and a Dean V ....
but in my eyes, a PRS Silver Sky or a Suhr Classic S just read as "It's a strat"

Same for innumerable teles, P-basses, J-basses...

Seems like Fender has as much ground as Gibson to go after those, if they are so inclined.

Welp, Pilgrim liked the recent show, and I haven't seen them live since the Quadrophenia tour 10 years ago which was fine, I just recall it being kind of low energy.
Maybe my opinion is overly influenced by the Superbowl, which was a one-off.
You might enjoy it :)

No accounting for taste... I would rather listen to a thousand Slayer parodies than a single minute of anything by (or imitating) the Doors ... your mileage may vary :D
