Gibson Basses / Re: NR II on eBay

Yeah, I thought the bird on the pickguard looked suspect with being shaded darker -- though I don't know the non-reverses as well as the '60s reverse models.

Not sure of the source on the tailpiece but I do know I've never seen an original '60s bird with one like that! (Maybe a Bach one that someone corroded to take the chrome edge off of?)

The bridge/mute plate is the only thing that makes me hesitate in dismissing the whole thing as bogus.

Yes, strange color.

Tuning machines and truss rod cover look like later replacements. Tailpiece is obviously not original.

I saw one years ago in San Francisco that was in the Epi yellow (Sunset Yellow?) - pretty much Gibson TV yellow IIRC - beautiful looking bass. Pity the neck was twisted on it though.

Thanks. I'm pretty partial to it. I actually like the look much more in black/white than the transparent red myself (subjective, I know - I had another before that was unaltered). Also sounds GREAT as a fretless. I've considered fretting it but can't bring myself to do it.

I've posted before with my Thunderbird but here's one with the fretless Embassy:

Just got my first 8K. Very impressed - it looks and sounds awfully close. Pickup ring is a little off compared to '60s originals (corners being more squared) but that's a minor point. Awesome deal on these.

One thing that I always found with Thunderbird pickups is the notes on the upper register on the D and G string leap out

Very true. Glad to hear these replicate that aspect.

Hey, great to have options. Just remember how hard it was to find *anything* in these pickups not all that long ago...

Seller says they made about 70 of the 9.2K's "per customer request" so someone mentioned it and they actually listened. Imagine that!!??!!

Yep, he is responsive. Similarly, nickel versions in about a month!

$44 with the ring, but I'm sure you noticed that's a sale price. Regular price from the website is $66 with the ring. And shipping to the US is more expensive if ordered from their website (I realize you're a long way from the US).

If the eBay price goes up, I won't be surprised.

Yes, shipping (to the EU) is $9.50 (as opposed to $5 on ebay) and there's an additional "gateway fee" so it's a wash. Essentially the same price. I used ebay myself as there's some protection if it gets lost, etc.

Really great job. Finish nitro?

I'd vote to leave the pickguard as is.

BTW Epiphone/Gibson do make (or made) reissue knobs (for their Wiltshire IIRC). I managed to get a set for my Embassy - though it was a chore as not an official part.

Great idea! Much nicer alternative to the 3-point than either the Babicz or Hipshot IMO.
