Gibson Basses / Re: Rare Bird - What's it worth
« on: August 26, 2015, 05:18:26 AM »
I have no photos at the moment.  The repair is hazed over with just a little black - it was never trying to match.   You can see that it was broken and repaired very cleanly and minimally - no extra wood/filler - just one hairline where it was glued

It's the nicest feeling and sounding bird I've ever played and it's his No 1 bass  - He is not looking to move it.

I appreciate all the knowledge here - thanks for the help!

Gibson Basses / Rare Bird - What's it worth

Asking for a very good friend

64 T Bird II in original Pelham Blue. - 30 year old headstock repair (very clean/very stable).

I am positive it's all original - my buddy has had it for about 10 years now and another friend that sold it to him had it for 10 years prior to that. the bass has a lot of famous recording history.

Played it the other night - the bass seemed to weigh nothing - drooling.

What is it worth?

I sold my Greco Bird to a friend to buy a 77 Gibson Bird that i later sold to the same person but i got the Greco back in the deal.  I prefer the Greco in both feel and sound.  I wouldn't take a chance on this one.

Pat,

Hope you are finding a balance.  I stopped gigging about 3 years ago after my marriage fell apart.  I still play but I really miss gigging a lot.

Other Bass Brands / Re: Incoming M-85, gaga for Guild.

I am one of the detractors of those pickups.  My Starfire has Darkstars and it was a VAST improvement in range.  The Bi-Sonic or Darkstars have much more dynamic response to touch - you can get very musical clean tones or you can dig in and actually overdrive the pickup with your right hand attack.  Nothing else like it.

The Guild pickups are definitely muddy. Passable until you get them in a live mix. If someone wants to buy my Guild pickups, I would sell them.

FYI: Phil Kubicki is a pretty accessible guy if you reach out.

I repaired a Kubicki jack once for a good friend and the EXACT SAME THING happened.  I re-lived all the horror again just now.

Your guitar player has a Daniel Lanois thing going on.

The Musicmaster Bass amp is really a great guitar amp and they are a steal at under $400.00.  Very similar circuit to a tweed Harvard but the open back makes it louder.  I use one with my Baritone and love it.

I would tread carefully and know exactly what you are getting from Rivington guitars.  They are, ummmmm, shrewd.

Here is my Greco.  I owned it 6 years ago and I am psyched to own it again.

Thanks everyone.  I just dove in and I had no issues dialing in a great setup.  There were a number of issues - bridge was jacked up high, Truss had way too much relief and the E and D saddles were in the wrong spots.  As soon as i figured out the issue with the saddles, everything else fell right into place.  This Greco Bird is great!
