Gibson Basses / '67 Thunderbird finishing touches
« on: January 26, 2009, 02:42:27 PM »
Got my tug bar from greatdealz1967 off ebay today. I just installed it on the bass, how can such a little thing make such a big difference ?  Almost done with this, just have to fill the holes between the bridge and tail piece and the hole near the controls.  Before and after.

Other Bass Brands / BC Rich pointy bass alert
« on: January 23, 2009, 12:34:59 PM »
I was out making the rounds to day and saw this well I have been looking at it for weeks really. BC Rich NJ series don't know the model. I couldn't help but think of Uwe and his Dimebag  bass lol. This bass is the zenith of '80s pointy bass design ! got it for cheap I think I will flip it.

Other Bass Brands / Two Kliras
« on: January 22, 2009, 12:49:22 PM »
Well I know how much Bill(drbassman) likes hollow bodies so I thought I'd post these. Bill was over the other day and one of the things in my shop was a Klira I bought several years ago from Thorton Davis ( Curt?).  TD brokered a deal and I got this one super cheap but one of the pups was dead. So I took the pup off and packed it up in a box to send to Curtis Novak. Well there that pup sat on my bench for the looooooooooooooooongest time. I sent it in about three weeks ago and got it back this week so I was finally able to get the bass back together ! Curtis did a fantastic job on the pup btw and very reasonable I thought. How does one end up with two you might ask ? Well the bass on the left was my first bass, my Dad bought it for me at the House of Guitars in Rochester NY must have been 1972. I can still remember how excited and happy I was with my Klira and Ampeg Reverb Rocket II amp (the one with both guitar and accordian input LMAO) packed in the back seat of my Dads '65 Tbird . At one point in my youth I tried to improve my Klira by installing Gibson SB450 pickups, I don't think they really sound any better than the originals lol but I had fun doing the mod (see Uwe my experiments have been going on for a long long time). Anyhow at one point my original ended up in pieces stored in the case, pretty much forgotten for the most part. Wow must have been about 20 years ago I put it back together and I still treasure it, one of these days I hope to find some original pickups for it. I like these  basses more than my '65 Hofner ! They play great and sure seem to be built better.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Thunderbird headstock repair
« on: January 17, 2009, 11:24:28 AM »
I bought this off ebay  a while ago. the buyer said the headstock repair was stable, well it wasn't took, me awhile to get to it but I glued it up today. I used a razor knife and some string tension to get it apart. it broke cleanly down the glue joint. I cleaned the joint and scored the two surfaces for better adhesion. mixed up a little West systems epoxy and clamped her up.

I have wanted a 8 or 12 forever this looks like it's going cheap. It has been messed with but I think I can make it look better. If I bid opinions on how high I should go ? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=170291634316&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=007

« on: December 31, 2008, 08:17:29 AM »
I have been jonesing for one for along time. So here is my plan. Back in the day I had a factory CAR 70's Tele, I think I paid $125 for it ! Alas I sold it  But what I am thinking about is a Alder bodied Dark Star Tele bass. Maple/maple neck, Black with the w/b/w  guard. Simple and understated. While i am gathering parts i need a pattern for the pick guard, can any one help ?

The Outpost Cafe / It's Been a Hard Days Night ! Gig Report
« on: October 26, 2008, 01:47:37 PM »
Wow I'm bushed. Sat, Night we did the annual Halloween benefit for the Buffalo Woman and Children Hospital.  We had to get there early about 1:30 in the afternoon for a 6:00 start ! Originaley it was to be two bands us JOHNNY SMOKE and That 80's Hair Band who are big in Buffalo.  Each band was to play three alternating sets  and there was supposed to be two sound stages. When we get there there is one sound stage and a third act ! Well it took a while to get everything straightened out and feathers smoothed but after that is was clear sailing and everyone was cool. The opening act played a nice tight 45 min set and then it was our turn. before I say anything more I have to tell you guys that this place is HUGE it was designed to handle 3,200 people each hour ! The crowd last year was 3,500-4,000 this year the count was 5,000 people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All I can say is we had a blast and the people loved us. The 80's band had the last set of the night which was great cause the crowd was thinning and we got to mingle and bask. I was hang'n on the bass side of the stage when I hear the singer of the 80's band call me up to do a number  :o Joe their bassist is holding out his bass for me and I say oh no you stay here to help me out !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I fired up my rig and the band launched into  AC /DC You Shock Me All Night Long, I have never played the song but I had a good idea how it went, and the cued me for the arrangement.  The other bassist and I had a blast and the crowd went nuts.  Such funThe costumes were fantastic ! Check out the back line you can see my Marshall/Hiwatt rig tucked in with a bunch of Dummy Ampeg cabs that the 80's band brought along. The Trace Elliot rig next to mine is what the 80's band really uses !

Gibson Basses / I need to sell the '67 EBO I just bought
« on: October 25, 2008, 06:39:07 AM »
My unemployed status means I need to move this. Nice and solid platform for restoration or play almost as is. The frets need work, most likley the first nine need to be replaced. One of the volume post is very spotty. The bridge pup is most likley from Japan. No breaks or repairs, truss rod works just fine. I would like to get out what I have in $650 and I will ship free in the lower 48 and it comes with a gig bag.

Gibson Basses / NR Thunderbird pickguard count
« on: October 19, 2008, 12:26:25 PM »
I am going to order the .060 w/b/w material this week. I have not got a price  figured yet but it will be up soon. Please keep in mind that these guards are big and use lots of material, that will be reflected in the cost. Thanks Scott
