The Outpost Cafe / Attended a world movie primier last night
« on: May 09, 2009, 06:40:50 AM »
My band JOHNNY SMOKE attended the world premier of What Goes UP last night in Buffalo NY. My guitar player  Tony is GOOD (they grew up together) friends with the executive producer and also colaborates with him from time to time. Even in Buffalo a world priemer is a very impressive event. The band showed up dressed the part and we played it for all it was worth ! We were given the star/vip treatment, got to walk the red carpet and everything. Got to mingle with some of the actors, writers, producers etc. The whole night people kept coming up to us asking for autographs and asking just who the heck we were. It was a lot of fun to play rock star for the night, the after party was a blast and we went out to a great little place in Buffalo for a very late /early dinner. The exec producer Tony Miranda hung out with us for a unusual amount of time and says he would like to use us in his next project, now that would be something ! Hey even if it does not come to pass we had a great time last night. I got home at 4:30 dog tired but it was worth it !

I bet you didn't see that coming ! When they first came out I bought one for all of $225 brand spanki'n new. I love the pickups ! I blew more speakers with that thing. I sold it in the early 80's and wished I never did. I have been watching ebay for a deal for quite a while............................. seems everyone gets a deal but me. In the past couple of days there have been like 5 black ones with the maple neck (I think these look the best). I got out bid on a couple so before I went to bed last night I tossed a bid of  300.00 one one ( about 50 bucks more than I wanted to spend but whats $50 when you want something ?) Well I woke up this morning and it turns out I won it ! I'll post pics as soon as it is here. Oh my back they make a SVT seem light.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / 8 string NR Thunderbird
« on: April 09, 2009, 12:48:49 PM »
I have wanted a 8 or 12 string bass for years but could never justify the purchase. Joe's 8 string NR has pushed me over the edge so I am starting to build my own. The body blank is cut out, I will run it through the thickness planer next week. I have a Lindy Fralin Bassbucker lying around so that's what is going to power it. I will most likely use a Warmoth neck, I may do a set neck or just bolt the F'er on there. I'm thinking Pelham Blue.

Gibson Basses / Tried the new Grabber today
« on: April 09, 2009, 10:16:37 AM »
They had one at the House of Guitars so I gave it a whirl, I didn't plug it in but here are my thoughts. It looks cool, matte black finish with the chrome pup. The first thing that surprised me is that the neck is set, I like that. There is a big volloute one the back of the headstock replacing the scarf joint headstock of the original. The back of the neck is finished matte clear, a nice contrast to the black body. The neck profile feels more like a Ripper than a Grabber.  I think my '78 feels and plays better. From a collectors point of view a cool bass but I think a vintage Grabber would suite most peoples needs. I doubt I would spring for one.

The Bass Zone / My Daughter got her first Jazz bass yesterday
« on: March 11, 2009, 06:21:29 AM »
I had to take Char out of school for a Dr. appointment yesterday, afterwords we stopped at the House of Guitars so she could check out basses. She has had a Hofner copy for quite sometime and has been using my Peavey Fury to practice for Jazz band. Once she got a look at my J bass she really wanted one of her own. we looked at MIM Js fretted and fretless (she plays upright in the orcestra). The bass that really caught her eye was a Standard Squier Jazz bass. She loved the red to black sunburst ! It was such fun to see the look on her face when I said we could buy it, she just lit up. Reminded me of when my Dad took me to the HOG for my first bass, I hope she remembers the day as fondly as I do. I'll get a picture of her playing it. In the mean time here is the MF picture. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document?cpd=0OEY&doc_id=99371&base_pid=512733&index=0   Here she is posing with her Douglas Hofner knock off.

Other Bass Brands / Hamer Chaparral 12 string
« on: March 08, 2009, 08:42:48 AM »
I have wanted a 12ver for years but never could justify the cost vs the use it would get. I am thinking of the import version of the Hamer Chaparral. I know the early ones were made in Korea and are spoken well of. Now they are made in China, anyone play the China one? How does it stack up ? Thanks Scott

Gibson Basses / Seymour Duncan Thunderbird pickup in a '76 cover
« on: March 06, 2009, 09:31:25 AM »
Yesterday my '76 pickup cover came back from Seymour Duncan's custom shop stuffed with their vintage repro Thunderbird pickup. I know others have done this and I have even had the opportunity to play one of Bill's (drbassman) basses with one of these pickups. I installed the pickup in the bridge position of my  much modded 2001 Gibson Thunderbird ( aka the Butcher Bird). Wow  is all I have to say these pickups really nail the Thunderbird tone, For me the attraction of the Thunderbird pickup has been the cutting mids and sparkle while maintaining nice lows that no other unit can seem to match. This pickup works great with the Dimarzo Model G, it gives the bass more cutting power and  sparkle ( I love that word to describe Tbird pups). This was well worth the $ imho, $29.00 for the cover and ring, $197.00 for the pickup so for a total of $226.00 delivered you get a excellent repro Thunderbird pickup. I would use these for TB builds, Converting a new Tbird to chrome, restoring a '76 (I never liked the '76 pickups). If I had a 60's Thunderbird needing pickups these would work also but I think If I were restoring a 60's Bird I would go the extra mile and buy the Mike Lull repro pickups for the astetics, covers made with the original dies and two holes where the '76 covers have three holes and a bigger radius on the top edge.

Gibson Basses / Ze Butcherbird iz complete
« on: March 03, 2009, 03:22:10 PM »
Well almost  ;D I have been wanting to get rid of the black TB plus pup by the bridge, I was thinking of putting a Lindy Fralin bassbucker in there but the pick up would require some modification. Then I thought of parring down the TB Plus to fit under a '76 chrome cover, not a bad idea someone else has done this. My final thought was to pull the TB plus (sell on ebay) and use the profits to buy a Mike Lull pup. In the mean time I have installed a '76 cover. Look'n good ! Mwahahahahaha

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / JAE Fenderbird build underway
« on: February 28, 2009, 08:55:13 AM »
First I would like to thank John aka barklessdog for the pattern of the extreme cutaway Fenderbird body and pickguard.  Just laying out parts and making patterns at the moment. I have to go out and get some poster stock to make patterns from the drawings. After that I'll start working on the bodies. It was fun to lay out the parts !

Gibson Basses / What should I do with my '67 Thunderbird ?
« on: February 24, 2009, 02:27:03 PM »
Ok guys I'm torn by what to do here. The '67 I have been bringing back has a UGLY pickup by the bridge, I think it is a Lawrence. It sounds good but I never use it. I am thinking putting a Thunderbird pickup in there mainly so I don't have to look at that  black plastic. The bass started off as a II then someone added the extra pup. I could do a refine and turn it back to a II but I have been thinking I am going to keep it in it's state of mojo. What say you guys ? Turn it into a IV or just leave it  as it is ?
