Gibson Basses / Whats up with this EB3 ?
« on: December 05, 2009, 07:17:53 AM »
This is up on ebay right now, it is a weird one. '69-71 mudbucker w/mounting ring, bound neck ala slotted headstock EB3. Stripped finish but Like new looking headstock (refined I am sure), small headstock w/inlay, large 70's style tuners, funny plugs on the back of the headstock, bridge pup in wrong location (added on later I suspect) and the jack on the edge of the body( moved when the bass was turned in to a EB3 ?) If it stays low I might bid. What the heck is this thing ? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120500691112&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

The saga is drawing to a end. I just got this wired up this AM. I started this back in the pit days, just a scrap of a late 60's Thunderbird II, it has been in one piece now for over a year thanks to a new neck by Michael Dolan, he did a fantastic job btw. Then I put the 60's pup I was going to use on it in my much rehabbed '67 NR Thunderbird so once again the bass was with out a pup. six months ago I ordered a Seymour Duncan Custom shop pup, it showed up last week  :o I just got the pots and caps the other day. So after years of silence this bass is sounding beautiful ! I am very happy and I think in the end well worth the effort ! Still needs to be finished, I was going to do Polaris white(the original color) but I might be open to suggestions. The bass still needs little bits here and there like shielding and a ground to the bridge etc. but I can't wait to take it to rehearsal and play a song on it ! For those who never saw how it started out.

Gibson Basses / New Tbirds at Musicians Friend 1,274.00
« on: November 30, 2009, 01:25:25 PM »
Musicians Friend has a 15% off sale today. That brings a shinny new Tbird home for 1,274.00. This deal also qualifies for 12 months no payment no interest. I am so f'ng tempted. Sigh...............................I need to develop some self control.

After almost 6 months the pickup for my Phoenix ( rehabed '67 Thunderbird II) is finally here ! I checked out my '69 Tbird and the volume is a 500K, I can't read the tone pot there is solder blobbed on it. I read in another post that the tone is a 250K with a orange drop cap. Is this so ? What is the value and where do you find a orange drop cap ? I put the pickup in today and spliced the lead to a cord and plugged this baby in for the first time ! Man does it sing ! Well worth the effort and wait.

Gibson Basses / Triumph bass in the house !
« on: November 16, 2009, 02:01:08 PM »
Stopped by the local GC today and would you believe of all things there is a Triumph hanging on the wall  :o I am sure you can guess that came right off the wall and into my hot little hands. No headstock break, light player wear no buckle rash. The only thing "wrong" with it was that a section of the control plate had been replace by the 1/4" input jack. Also came with the ohsc.  Pictures soon !

Gibson Basses / Mike Lull Tbird bridges.
« on: November 14, 2009, 12:19:46 PM »
Geeze I checked out Lulls site and  he describes how he developed a intonatable bridge for Thunderbirds   These were built by Hipshot, about two years ago some guys who worked at Hipshot showed up at a gig and eyeballed my bridge, also Mike Lull had one of my bridges on site while he was building prototypes. I designed and had my first prototype built in 1983, I will have to check my records but I think I started selling bridges in 2004.  As I remember he stated he couldn't get my bridge to work ? I am feeling like he stole my idea. I might even be considering legal action. Advice? suggestions? Am I being unreasonable ?

The Outpost Cafe / Life sure is funny
« on: November 14, 2009, 08:52:32 AM »
Things are pretty nuts here in my little corner of the world. Not in a bad way just it seems like everything likes to hit the fan at once. First I got let go from my "new" job two weeks ago, lets just say we didn't see eye to eye. I have never been let go or fired in my life, a strange new experience for me. I am OK with it, it was very clear from the begining that things were not going to work out. My only worry is the stress it puts on my dear sweet wife. So at the moment I a scrambling to make a $ Pickguards, bass bodies/builds, guitar repair, furniture repair, ebay and of course my old stand by painting. I have been a painter paper hanger for well over 20 years, I have been trying to get away from it.........................with out much success lol I don't mind the work in fact I quite enjoy it. I do high end interior residential. I am neat and meticulous, you hire me you get me and there are those who will pay well for that kind of personal attention. So on top of all this my wife Cathy has finally taken the plunge and is opening her own yoga studio !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She has been wanting to do this for some time and the timing  is just right. She and her partner found the perfect space and signed the lease two weeks ago so at least my new status has allowed me to renovate their space quickly, they open their doors late next week! I am so proud of Cath and I know that she is going to be very successful, but man is she sweating the details right now ! So many little things to take care of. Anyhow thanks for the space to rant. I am thankful everyone is healthy.
