Gibson Basses / Re: Martin Turner
« on: July 19, 2010, 08:39:36 AM »
Sorry if this has been discussed before but I found some pics which left me wondering. I recall reading that the "Argus" inner sleeve photo Thunderbird (sunburst) was stolen at that time (1972) and Martin got another from Overend and this bass was later painted white. The "Argus" 'bird has three knobs and a black headstock, right? This photo is supposed to be taken in 1974:

Is it the same bass? Or a possible loan from a , say, Walter Becker or that Doobie Brothers bassist since the Ash are playing the Midnight Special at that clip?:)

This is the 'bird he is still using, right?

PS. I still do not buy that he used a Ric on "Argus", unless he was so visionary that he bypassed the infamous cap (which his Ric still had when they recorded the previous album, just listen to "Vas Dis" for example...;) )

If you want to check out his solo stuff, start with Rockland...

I have his first three albums and I like the first one (which is an EP actually) best. A bit too slick and AOR for me, lacks the zany edge that Max had.

You saw them in 1980? Was it after the "Universal Juvelines" and if yes, did they still have Terry on keys? There's some clips on youtube from 1980 that has Dave Stone (ex-Symphonic Slam, ex- Rainbow) on keys.

You don't happen to own any unofficial live recordings?

Any fans? I discovered them about 14 years ago, a friend made a tape with "Battlescar", "In Context Of The Moon" and "Beyond The Moon". Of course I later discovered they were capable of much more than 'just' playing heavy prog and nowadays I think them as a hard rock's NRBQ if you get my point. :) Of the individual players my fav is Terry Watkinson: a great keyboard player, as underrated as, say, Hugh Banton of VDGG.

Samples from every studio album:

(The middle part reminds me of Little Feat)

Rickenbacker Basses / Re: Roger Glover's three 4001's

So Roger's T-Bird is a '63-'65 II with an added (Ric?) pickup. Or 'was', I recall reading that the headstock snapped during one gig.

I didn't know he had another similarly (hideously, that is) modded 4001 with two slanted Jazz pickups and also a fretless! Also lurking behind him is the Thunderbird hat is somehow modded too. I recall seeing that bass on some Rainbow promo video.

Nazareth's Pete Agnew had the red 4001 in one pic or at least I think it was the same bass (had the Dawk mods) and Glover being Naz' producer at that time it's also very likely.

NRBQ's Joey Stampinato with some great sounds from a Long Horn.

I might be wrong but I recall that Schaller's bridge is dicontinued. Has anybody tried this one?:

He used a Fender P bass & Hiwatt's at the Young Vic... Check out the picture in insert that comes with the CD... page 10.

The same pic is also in the book "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere - The Complete Chronicle of The Who 1958-1978" on page 198. This reads on page 190 (in the chapter from year 1970):

Sunday, 15 November

The date of the Who's first Lifehouse rehearsal at the Young Vic Theatre, Waterloo, South East London, as documented in Mike Shaw's (Track Records) diary. Roger's cousin, Graham Hughes, was on hand to take photographs (some of which appear on pages 197-198). In the original edition of this book, these were erroneously attributed to a Young Vic performance on 5 May 1971 (from a misleading date appearing on Hughes' original contact sheets).

So the date on the cd booklet is also wrong. The pic with the Precision is from 1970. Unless I'm proven wrong, the Young Vic gig featured on the deluxe edition of "Who's Next" has John playing a Thunderbird bass through a Hiwatt rig.  8)

Is there an 8-saddle bridge that would fit in to a HB-8 (the new model)? It don't have to be a direct replacement.
This is the original bridge:

Great looking bass. That list of early Wal owners was very interesting. Some non-bass players like Mike Giles and Sandy Pearlman were in it too.

My favs are Ronnie and Jan Hammer. Yes, he played some great Moog bass on some tracks like "Blue Wind" and the stuff on "There And Back". Not a bad drummer either (my fav Jeff drummer is Narada Michael Walden).

Thanks Uwe. How's the sound, more barky/honky with both pickups on than on the subsequent production model?
