Gibson Basses / Re: Chris Squire's Thunderbird
« on: August 10, 2010, 11:28:21 PM »
That one pic looks familiar there was a guy who shot a few photos during the Drama tour & posted them at the Soundchaser YES forum I asked if I could post them at the old Dude Pit & he said sure they were the first I’ve seen of the NR Tbird in action

I remember asking there about Squire's Thunderbird as I had never seen it (believing it was a '76 or at least a reverse) and then you posted those pics. Thanks again!

I've actually been thinking about stereo-izing my Ibanez 8-string for this purpose.  Not something I'd personally use live, but could be lots of fun for recording.

I have my both 12-string basses stereo-zized.:) Both pickups go through the stereo volume pedal and a stereo delay, the neckpick goes to the normal channel of DR-103 and the bridge pickup through some more effects (mainly distortion) to the bright channel of the same amp. Works splendidly even with that one amp and will work even better when I get another amp and a cab.:) Or maybe a small Leslie for the bridge pickup channel.

I thought all 4001s were equipped for Ric-O-Sound but I could very easily be wrong. In any case, I'm curious about the T-bird's electronics as well.

The deluxe models were, can't remember the year when the Ric-O-Sound jack was added as a standard to them but the 'S' models were mono ans Squire's bass was and is a 4001S (or RM 1999 like it was called in England).

Any comment on that stereo speculation? His Rick was of course modded as a stereo so why would he use the same Y-cord with the T-Bird if it wasn't? Has anybody tried it with a T-Bird, each pickup to it's own channel?

Pelham Blue.
Interesting pic, from the Buggles/Drama period.

I saw it once referred as Bus/Yeggles period.:)

He used the bass on "Does It Really Happen?" on "Drama". Great sound.

What colour it is? Pelham Blue or something else? Some say it's green but which one?

Squier VM Precision TB aka Telecaster Bass Model II modded with a Fender DeLuxe bridge and a second PUP ( aka the Kenny Gradney mod  ;D )

Hey, that's neat and glad to see I'm not the only one who spotted the modded Tele Kenny played with the Feat circa '75-'77. How does it sound, especially the bridge pickup which seems to be in a Stingray position if I'm not terribly wrong.

My only re-issue bass is the Longhorn (the 2nd reissue with the vol, tone and a pickup switch, a finished neck and an adjustable bridge) and I like it very much. Of course, if the JV series Squier Jazz counts as a re-issue I'll pick it then. Or the '76 T-Bird...

Greco Thunderbird on Ebay

The pickups are much closer together or do my eyes need fixing?

Gibson Basses / Andy Hummel's Thunderbird

The former Big Star bassist Andy Hummel sadly died two days ago. Apparently he was a Thunderbird player also, or at least on Big Star's January 1973 show at Lafayette's Music Room, Mephis, Tennessee. The photo is from the "Keep An Eye On The Sky" boxset.

R.I.P. Andy.

This is probably their best of the prog songs, or the "Moon" songs

Dave Stone on keys. The studio version has a great synth bassline but Dave Myles doesn't do badly here with his Precision.:) Gotta love those Taurus pedals at the end too.

As regards the kimono pic, judging from his haircut that is later than 1974 and well into the Wisefield line-up. He might be playing an Orville there - I know he has one as a replacement for his white Bird -, it's hard to tell from the headstock lettering. That TBird looks new and pristine.

No, it's still with Ted on guitar:

The whole lot:

This set also has that 'bird. Did Orvilles exist then('74 - '75)?

The white bass used to be sunburst and unbroken. I always believed that Overend Watts broke it and Martin bought it broken from him (and there are interviews of Martin out there that create that impression), but it has now transpired in a very recent interview in a German bass mag that Martin broke it himself while throwing it up in the air and hitting something (the wall of amps) with it after an especially rejoiceful gig. Mind you, all this while the bass was still on loan from Overend and unpaid!

So Martin actually has the nerve to approach Overend complaining that Overend had loaned him a "not very stable bass" and offers him a symbolic price which the flabbergasted Overend (who himself had accidentally broken quite a few Birds) accepts. Martin picks up the pieces (literally) and has his luthier repair the bass with a replacement maple neck from the fifth fret onwards (he still has the original maho splinters neck and headstock atomized to and keeps them glued together at home), eventually the bass is painted white too.

So which one of the above it is then? The one with the white inner in the headstock and 4 knobs (the photo is from 1973 from this set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mtwa/sets/72157619187354946/) or the other with the all-black headstock?
