Other Bass Brands / Ibanez RS-900
« on: April 17, 2012, 09:24:15 PM »
I recently acquired a 1980 Ibanez Roadster RS-900 bass, the very same model that Phil Lynott used circa '79-'81. Minus the very heavy alder body the bass plays and sounds great and was clearly Ibanez' attempt to snitch some sales from Music Man Stingray (the pickup placement, the construction, the active preamp). I bypassed the preamp altogether (I hate batteries and really didn't need the preamp) and with the signal splitted and some grit from the Leslie pedal this bass sounds killer.

Any others round here? It's sister model RS-800 didn't have the preamp and may have had it's body made of different wood but was otherwise the same. John Wetton used a black RS-800 on the last UK tours in 1979.

The Bass Zone / Field Music
« on: March 09, 2012, 10:36:34 PM »
One of the best bands I've heard in a long time. If you like Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, 10CC, Rupert Hine, Split Enz, Rush, Wire or any other good progressive pop check them out. Two brothers, both great instrumentalists (especially as drummers) and they've made 4 albums under the moniker Field Music plus two on their own under The Week That Was (Peter Brewis) and School Of Language (David Brewis). Here's some samples:

I was wondering if there's a large enough cover that you could fit in a normal Precision splitcoil? I have a Precision body which has plenty of room for some experiment and I reversed the P-pickup 'cause it sounds better that way with the added Jazz Bass bridge PU. However I'd like to cover the P-pickup 'cause it looks a bit starnge reversed and also because the large cover Neil Murray had in his old Telecaster/P-bass hybrid looked so cool.:)

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / 8-string bridge for an Aria SB-700
« on: September 07, 2011, 09:32:53 AM »
I'm about to have my Aria SB-700 converted to an 8-string bass and what I need the most is a fully adjustable bridge. I've heard the Schaller bridge is a bit too wide so if anyone has any ideas and suggestions please tell. The neck width at the saddle is 45mm and at the body end 56mm.

The bass itself is heavily modified, it used to be a 9-string (like a 12-string but without G-strings) and is now a 6-string (tuned from E to E, like a Fender VI but with a full scale) so the headstock has the tuners and the neck will support the strings. As an 8-string it would get more usage as I need one in addition to two of my 12-strings.

The Bass Zone / Early Pino Palladino w/John Sloman
« on: May 23, 2011, 06:25:52 AM »
Found these soundclips featuring Pino playing the P-bass:

Pulsar was a Welsh/Canadian band in the late seventies featuring singer/multi-instrumentalist John Sloman, drummer Dixie Lee and bassist Pino Palladino and from Canada (Where they were based) Dave Cooper on guitar and Greg Dechert on keyboards. The tracks remind me a bit of Rundgren & Utopia.

Here's a quite recent John Sloman interview. I feel it's a shame he is mostly known from his 15 minutes with Uriah Heep and one live album with Gary Moore (recorded while ill).

The Bass Zone / Robert Palmer with Andy Fraser?
« on: May 09, 2011, 04:42:52 AM »

Rupert Hine on PPG and maybe Jess Roden on co-lead but is that Mr. Fraser playing the Washburn bass? He played on two tracks on "Clues" and of course wrote "Every Kinda People" for Robert.

The Bass Zone / Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant)
« on: April 05, 2011, 07:13:19 AM »
The dark Chris Squire as someone put it, Ray Shulman played some amazing basslines for Gentle Giant. Punchy and complex but groovy and with a great sound.

The single they apparently hated:

More commercial from the later years but the bassline in the chorus is a bliss.

Ray was and is also a great guitarist and violin player. From "Octopus" (1972) onwards he used mainly a Fender Precision, played with a pick.

Lull pickups, perhaps?

Sounds great anyway:

This was the first generation, right?

When this model was in production and when did they change the outlook (for the worst if you ask me...)?
