Gibson Basses / Neck blanks on FleaBay
« on: March 26, 2008, 01:26:29 PM »
Well, I decided to take a chance on one of these:

Looking ahead to my next long-term project.  I've got a fair amount of parts collected, and I thought this might not be bad for a neck.  Anyone familiar with the seller?  He has a lot items that he's listing as being from the old Kalamazoo warehouse.

Any idea what a Sunn Beta Bass rig with a Sunn 4x10 cab would be worth?

The Bass Zone / My new parts box
« on: February 14, 2008, 04:34:10 PM »
If I haven't posted here about this before, I finally found a parts box to replace the cardboard boxes in my closet.  It holds just about everything I need - pickups, bridges, tools, even a couple wall hangars.  For $20, this thing has plenty of large storage slots, including the large drawers on each end.  The Stanley Tool Organizer XL is pretty nice.

Bass Amps & Effects / Sam Ash carrying Phil Jones amps?
« on: February 05, 2008, 05:20:33 PM »
My local Sam Ash now has the small Phil Jones amps in stock.  I decided to give the Suitcase a spin at lunch today.  First, I tried a used Allen Woody Epiphone bass.  Didn't care for it, but this bass was pretty bad.  It looked nice, but the bridge was sitting higher off the body than an entrance ramp on an Indiana freeway.
Next, I tried a Sting sig bass.  I gotta say, it was pretty sweet.  Even only 1/3 of the way up, the amp sounded just great all the way up the neck.  Nice, distinct notes.

Let's see...I can get rid of one of the Ashdowns....

Other Bass Brands / Magnatone Hurricane project
« on: January 20, 2008, 06:30:25 PM »
Well, it's getting to be about that time.  I need to start my next project.  I picked up this Magnatone Hurricane a few months back.  I have all the parts - it's just in need of restoration.

Whoever had this appears to have stripped it, and painted it black.  And they didn't do a very good job of it.  I've begun sanding off the back of the neck, and part of the face of the headstock.  I can't see any indication that the brand decal is still there.  I'm trying to decide what to do, since it's going to take a little work and money to get this back together.  Here's what I'm thinking right now.  I'll take the neck back to natural wood, and possibly do a tung oil finish or something like that.  As far as the body goes (and my luthier is going to do all the real work), I'm thinking of just sanding it down (finding out what is on there now, of course), putting another coat of good black on it, and then putting some white pinstriping (kinda like fake binding) on it.  Cover it with clearcoat, and it'll be done.  Seems to be the least amount of work.

Any thoughts?

The Outpost Cafe / Give us this day our daily conundrum...
« on: January 19, 2008, 05:09:46 PM »
Not having a steady gig really messes me up.   It's probably my own fault, since I don't have an amp at home right now (no room), and don't practice near as much as I should.  I rely on hitting local jam nights for me release.

The result of all this is simply that I don't have any idea how I want to sound.  Which bass should I favor?  Are my amp settings right?  Why am I buying more crap without having a goal?

When I was in the band last year, I had a direction.  This past week-end, I made the trek for one of those jams hosted by the FDP, where I can also be found handing out lies and innuendo.  I actually took my amp, only because I still had it in the truck from an audition earlier in the week (don't ask...).

I get up to play, and suddenly, it's all foreign to me.  I had the new bass, and it seemed to sound and feel pretty good.  I strapped on my faithful Epi Holy Crap bass, and suddenly, I was hit with - "What the heck is this?  Have I always sounded like this?  Is it me?  Am I just panicking?"  In the aftermath, videos were posted, and things were actually pretty good.  I was surprised and relieved.

Anyone else go through this in their downtime?

Oh...and did I mention that I've been trying different strings that I got from the Dude, and now my head is a complete mess on that subject, too.   Eeeesssshhhh...

Next up - what should I do with the Magnatone restoration?  It will never be original again...
