Gibson Basses / Re: Fretless EB-2
« on: December 19, 2018, 07:34:18 AM »
Yes, the prices have gotten pretty steep for the old EB-2.  I guess if it hasn’t got a snapped headstock it’s worth a premium these days as well. But with that caveman sand through on the top ply it’s really a sad beast. Great for the classic champagne sparkle refin but other than that I’d rather buy a complete wreck husk and pay a lot less.

This guy is wonderful. I miss Ontario and when I watch this guy I feel like I'm there. Fire up a Craven and pop open a Blue. He calls out crap. Fun.

It would mean the Chibsons would be more legit. I doubt there would be a major uptick in QC as the better ones are frighteningly good now.  Realistically it's the way of the world unless they want to be a cottage industry/Rickenbacker. They'll all be there soon, as there's a shrinking market and shrinking retail outlets that can stay viable.

The Outpost Cafe / Re: Antique radios "Gotta have"

Seems like just a few years back you could score a Farm set on CL for peanuts, but they're scarce and pricey now.  In the rural upper Midwest it's not uncommon to see the whizzer chargers on poles still. They were wind mill chargers for Dc farm radios if you didn't pull the tractor battery. I learned tube guitar amp stuff from an antique radio guy. You can find out anything at antiqueradios.com.

I've owned two 1958 EB-2's, both with the single coil mud buckers. They both had regular strap buttons on the butt end. And I owned a 56 EB(1) with the peg. I've never seen an early Eb2 with a peg set up.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is legit though. I've seen Eb2's with and without the choke from the same period. I've seen several Eb0's with stock bridge coverish things and a couple with Tbird bridge set ups that looked stock. And I saw a 58 eb2 with a 57 letter code, choke and chrome bridge and studs. This was back when you couldn't give these away for $100 so I'm guessing Gibson did whatever.

And I'm still wondering what we are overlooking with that Pro Vintage Thunderbird. They must have f•cked up somewhere?!

It's got the d-bag version jack.  Easy fix.  Also, no curvy tug bar, but easy fix.  Paint it all white and play Mott the Hoople.

These things look interesting. Thankfully in the future I can quit toying with the idea of a used Monkey bass and look for one of these in the $400 range. If there can be a vast cottage industry of reranch fans converting Schlepiphone Les Paul's and SGs into Fooled ya level Gibsons, then I'll be glad to rasp out a grafted on batwing to one of these Almost-embassies. One of each, and I'll while away the hours in the senior living apartment!

One out of every 50 will be light.  Regular pup but active-y controls. As a kid I saw the CAR finish everywhere. I liked the look but none of them had rosewood, which would've been nicer. A handful shipped with the Claw, which I love.

The guitars look nice, and I also am impressed with the Joe Bonamosa Firebird I they are putting out. That's better than any reissue they've been doing for the past few.  As for the bass I like that it's full scale but they did that before.  I'd like one in 30", two point bridge, black plastic cover on a mud bucker, and Kluson banjo tuners.  I might have make my own again.

That happens with just about anything used. When I needed to replace my turntable about 5 years ago, it was amazing how many older ones were listed at premium prices when they hadn't been cleaned up or serviced, or the seller didn't even know if they were working.

Turntable's have attracted the worst kinds of people. It's like baseball card collectors.
