Gibson Basses / Re: Gibson EB-2D from Germany
« on: February 07, 2010, 05:22:06 PM »
I haven't seen a label like that but then again I can't remember seeing an EB-2 as late as 71. OTOH I'm not aware of any EB-2 copies that used the two point nylon saddle bridge. The tuners aren't original, but the seller does say so.

Looks like a poorly repaired neck/headstock break and the serial number is gone. I wouldn't pay much for it.

Good luck, I don't think it will go for near 2500.

This is one of the better newspaper corrections I've seen: http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/593663-196/correction.html

And those responsible for sacking the people who have just been sacked have been sacked.  :)

Gibson Basses / Re: Intonation report on Epi NR Tbird.

Good for you. It does take some time to fiddle around with intonation, especially the first time, but it's really not that complicated. Now that you've done it, chances are you'll do it yourself from now on. And the bass sounding good is a bonus.

Maybe it was just a turf war, although I have no idea if geese fight to protect their territory from humans. Whatever it was, than goose was pissed.

Since it's so difficult to sand, I wouldn't be surprised if the white coat is some kind of epoxy based seal coat.

The Outpost Cafe / Things that are hard to say when you're drunk
« on: February 05, 2010, 11:04:27 PM »
THINGS THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO SAY WHEN DRUNK:

1. Innovative
2. Preliminary
3. Proliferation
4. Cinnamon

THINGS THAT ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO SAY WHEN DRUNK:

1. Specificity
2. Anti-constitutionalistically
3. Passive-aggressive disorder
4. Transubstantiate

THINGS THAT ARE DOWNRIGHT IMPOSSIBLE TO SAY WHEN DRUNK:

1. No thanks, I’m married.
2. Nope, no more booze for me!
3. Sorry, but you’re not really my type.
4. No thanks, I’m not hungry.
5. Good evening, officer. Isn’t it lovely out tonight?
6. Oh, I couldn’t! No one wants to hear me sing karaoke.
7.. I’m not interested in fighting you.
8. Thank you, but I won’t make any attempt to dance, I have no coordination. I’d hate to look like a fool!
9.. Where is the nearest bathroom? I refuse to pee on the side of the road.
10. I must be going home now, as I have to work in the morning.

As my grandfather used to say, if I could buy him for what he's worth and sell him for what he thinks he's worth, I'd be a rich man.

Some of you may remember Robbie O'Brien from this thread. He teaches guitar building at Red Rocks Community College in the Denver area.

He will now be offering some private instruction in his own shop. I subscribe to his YouTube channel, otherwise I know nothing more than what you see here.

Allied Lutherie and Allen Luthier Supplies are also sources.

I would never use a pure tung oil (or straight BLO). Offers almost no protection and never dries hard. Yuck. OTOH a "tung oil finish" is typically a thinned wiping varnish and often isn't even tung oil-based, but you can at least wipe on thin coats that dry hard and even a few coats will offer some protection.

Tru-Oil is a modified-oil alkyd resin wiping varnish, no matter that they market it otherwise. It's not the most durable but you can rub on thin coats, it will build as little or as much as you need, and it feels good to the touch if you put it on right.

Danish Oil is a mixture of varnish and oil, less durable than a typical straight varnish but looks and feels nice and does offer some protection.

Zachary... lol, what a poseur.   You can tell by the looks of his guitars that they're shitty. I remember awhile back on the TDPRI that someone posted a link to a Tele-style guitar he did. Looked like the finish was done by a three year old.
