I've been playing around with the idea of building a multi scale bass. So with fanned frets. Just for fun. Something completely different.
Last few days I made some drawings.

Based on the model of the Brooks EB-N.
But with Thunderbird-ish headstock. Tuners: 2 above, 3 below

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / A drastic make-over
« on: May 18, 2021, 02:36:55 PM »
A few years ago I had two prototype bass guitar built by a Chinese manufacturer.
The idea was to offer a medium priced series next to the basses that I build myself (by hand). I was gonna complete the Chinese built bass guitars myself with high quality hardware and electronics here in The Netherlands.
But I abandonded the whole project, because I was not happy with the level of fit and finish by the Chinese manufacturer. There were too many mistakes in the lacquer and other details. I would have cost me too much of my time to get them up to the level that I had in mind.

Eventually I sold both prototypes to a Dutch bass player, who is very happy with both bass guitars.
He completely relic-ed one of them.
And the other was left in its original state. Until two months ago. Then he sent me a request to give the bass a complete make-over...

The original:

The final result after the metamorphosis:

I tried it with a red speed knob as an eye catcher:

Other Bass Brands / Aviator
« on: May 16, 2021, 04:06:36 AM »
Has any of you guys ever heard of Aviator guitars?
They're a Czech brand. And they build very interesting guitars and basses.
Their work looks very clean and very exclusive.

More guitars than basses. And almost all basses that I see are multi-scale (fanned frets).
But from their site I understand that you can put together any configuration that you want.

I had never heard of this brand until yesterday.

Gibson Basses / Thunderbird X
« on: April 01, 2021, 01:36:33 AM »
This popped up on Facebook.

A guy named David Bourke posted it and wrote this:

A unique opportunity to acquire one of only three (and the only red, the other two were blue) Gibson Thunderbird X prototypes, made and gifted to me in 2012 when I worked at Gibson.  Gorgeous pearloid finish, robo-tuners, Babicz bridge, built in digital amp modelling, bass type modelling, player modelling (the Flea preset is spot on!), plus phaser, flanger, echo, distortion, compressor, exciter, eight-string, fretless, and foam mute simulations. USB, midi, 1/4" jack and balanced line outputs. Will work off a car battery if needed. Nothing this beast can't do.  Will include custom flightcase, bass is located in Kent, UK. Will ship worldwide and buyer's expense and risk.  Serious 5-figure offers only.  Will consider p/x for a Warwick Adam Clayton upside-down Explorer, preferably in gold. No timewasters please.

Go for it Uwe!

The Outpost Cafe / George Kooymans seriously ill
« on: February 05, 2021, 01:32:33 AM »
George Kooymans, founding member of Golden Earring is seriously ill. He won't be able to perform again.
Even though I'm not a fan, it's still a shock.
He and bass player Rinus Gerritsen have been playing together for sixty years.

The premium cases can be ordered for models as common as the EB-O to as rare as the 20/20 or the Leland Sklar Signature model.

I wonder how many people are going to order a case for their Leland Sklar Signature bass...
