The Outpost Cafe / Psychedelic and prog rock
« on: March 06, 2014, 06:29:29 PM »
I realize neither of these genres are for everyone, but I've been digging around on YouTube looking for Golden Earring stuff and have run across some nifty stuff.
None of them I've heard of but some of them are pretty enjoyable.

This one from a band called Please is pretty good. Whoever is posting this stuff on YouTube takes some time about providing album information.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / '60s NR II restoration
« on: February 14, 2014, 06:23:56 PM »
I received the bass safe and sound. First thing I did was take off the hardware and work on stripping some of the paint off the headstock looking for a serial number. As yet, nothing. It's had two sets of tuners on it in it's life though.

Haven't stripped the neck yet, but dang is that one smooth neck. If it's repaired it's the best job ever.

Both original pickup cavity and the added j pup cavity are red. Hmm. Was the j pup cavity painted red to match the original Cardinal Red finish? Who knows?

Control cavity is also red.

Is it normal to have a gap in the neck pocket like this?

This photograph makes me think that the entire bass was stripped and then repainted. The original bridge was replaced and nicely, with an aftermarket bridge. My theory is that the entire bass was stripped and repainted. I also suspect the easiest course of action was to repaint it red if it was originally red. If the entire thing was stripped though, who's to say? That is some beautiful mahogany though.

Someone had painted the pickguard black. In the original eBay photos you could just see the Thunderbird stamp.

Not knowing what type paint was used, I started off experimenting with brake fluid (which model builders use to strip old model kits before rebuilding them) and model paint thinner. Turns out that using a dish washing scotchbrite pad, the thinner worked out quite well. The weird spot to the left of the pickup hole is actually distorted material. On the backside is an area which looks exactly like too much model glue was used when gluing to pieces together. It's bubbled and rough. Fortunately it's not terrible.

Gibson Basses / Saw Gov't Mule last night
« on: February 09, 2014, 07:53:19 AM »
First time I'd ever seen them. They struck me as a cross between Allman Brothers and Mastodon (light). The current bassist, Jorgen Carlson, started out with what looked like a new G-3 or Grabber II (couldn't tell because he performed with his back to us for most of the show), but that bass had some sort of technical problem so it was swapped out with a ferocious sounding Thunderbird.

After a couple of songs the T-bird was switched out for what looked like a Jack Cassidy, which he used for most of the rest of the evening. Scattered in later part of the evening was a P-bass and an 8 string bass I couldn't get a good look at.

They sounded great!

Gibson Basses / '66-69 NR T bird questions
« on: January 31, 2014, 07:05:43 AM »
So, now that I have an incoming NR II I have some questions about them. And yeah, I'm expecting (and hoping) Scott and Uwe to chime in on this one!

According to Jules site, the production breakdown is as follows:
1966= 361, 1967=0, 1968=67, 1969=7.

The current owner of mine says he couldn't locate the serial number. The bass has been painted an ugly red and he removed the paint on one portion to check for one.
IF there is no number for whatever reason, are there any other ways of identifying what year it is (I don't yet know what's on the pots)?
Did the body thickness vary between the years?
Where there any headstock differences?
Were the pups all located in the same place?

Any other information would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Gibson Basses / Really, Gibson? I thought this was from The Onion!
« on: January 30, 2014, 05:14:04 AM »
I only put this here because this is where all the posts about the Fish & Wildlife Service raid were posted.

If this is true, this is some cynical shit.
