Cool bass...but it's heavier than I like..over 10 lbs.

Seller knows me from NAMM shows. He now runs a company making instrument cabs. Has some name bands using them.

He wanted to trade for my sunburst Gibby Les Paul Sig bass and guitar set but I din't go for it. I think the LP Sigs are a lot easier to move than a pricey Ribbecke TBird.

Wow....I have the last Kubicki that Phil was building when he died. He also signed his name and dated the pocket.

So, is it worth tens of thousands $$ ??

A friend of mine owns the only Thunderbird that Leo ever built, as a custom order/favor for him.
Even has a custom graphic paintjob. A Leo one-off should be worth bucks. Even has a photo of him with Leo handing it to him.

RIP

One of the great singing bassists. Crimson was a huge early influence of mine.

Sad to see him go but he sure left an impressive catalog of work.

Geez Uwe......"I get LI and NJ MIXED UP" ?!?!

One easy way to tell the difference......Close your eyes in each of the two locations and take a deep breath.

NJ FKIN STINKS!!!!!!!!  Plus they have red dirt. And "da Mob"

LI has spoiled rich kids with no values, from their parents handing them $50,000 cars when they turn 16 y.o.

...and lots of infamous a-holes who grew up there like, Joey Buttafucco (and Amy Fisher,) Lindsay Lohan, Alan Baldwin (and his less famous brothers,) Howard Stern, Mariah Carey, Rosie O'Donnell. It something in the water....good for bagels and a-holes.

However, Billy Joel is one of the good guys.

I've got some Hamer doublenecks. The bass is on the bottom if it is paired with a guitar neck.

If it has two bass necks....I have a couple with an 8-string on top of a 4-string. And a fretless 5 over a fretted 4.

Also have the only doubleneck Factor Phil Kubicki made, a prototype. A fretless over a fretted. One drop D 32-inch scale, one 34 inch non-D.

Nice looking bass. Didn't realize there was a Hillman Signature Bass.

Certainly a guy who deserves a nod for his work.

It looks vaguely familiar but I can't think of the brand name.

I've seen that headstock before.

The Bass Zone / Re: I think I need an 8 string

Since the topic came up I started wondering so checked mine. I got the same, 33 5/8 on the long scales and 30.5 on the shortie V.

Did they offer a medium scale too at any point?  I've heard them referred to before but always assumed people were talking about the long scales being slightly under 34.

I had both versions of the aluminum Kramer 8s. The second version with the more normal body I really liked. Had 8 saddles and I actually thought it was a long-scale u til I measured it. Heavy....and a purple raspberry color.

I DO have a unfnshed, medium scale alumnum Kramer that was a baritone guitar prototype. Got it from a family member of the Kramer founder years ago. Don't recall the exact scale length.

Except Neil Young really does have an actual huge ass amp he uses on stage....

It has a Magnatone name across it (my first amp ever) but it isn't a real Magnatone. It is some sort of huge cab that holds various speakers and horns that Neil routes his real amps thru.

Gibson Basses / Re: '63 Thunderbirds
« on: June 14, 2016, 04:38:29 PM »

I have a '63 Firebird with the original two-piece neck.

Were the two '63 Thunderbirds supposedly also like those or one-piece necks?

Would it seem logical that those two 1963 TBirds may have simply been the NAMM Show exhibit pieces that got sold?

Well......the price is way up there because it has the custom 7th fret tape marker on the back of the neck, so you can hit the octave notes in the dark.

That was a $500 Gibson upgrade back in the late 60s, wasn't it?
