The Bass Zone / Looking for a Hollowbody
« on: July 11, 2017, 04:36:38 PM »
So, I've been bitten by the new bass bug, and have been giving a lot of thought to getting a hollow body. I'll be playing with a garage/punk band. Any recommendations if working with an $800 or so budget?

I've played a reissue Starfire, an original EB-2D, as well as several funky old cheapies (ala Orfeus, Conquistador.) But shops don't tend to have much in stock to put my hands on. Of the ones I've played the Gibson was the favorite, but I can't swing the $2300 price.

I usually prefer shortscale instruments with this band, but am not married to one scale length. I really like the look of EB-2, but again, not married to anything in particular. I'm interested in the Gretsch Electromatic, Epiphone Rivoli reissues, Jack Casady Signatures, Kays, Harmonys, Arias, anything and everything, really. Spending less is always nice, and I could go a hair higher if there's a clear winner.  Just asking for opinions and experience!

Congratulations on successful treatment! In addition to the prescribed meds you may want to speak to your doctor about getting enough iodine, vitamin d, selenium, and iron.

Frequently we see thyroid replacement made with something called levothyroxine (aka T4,) which is the main hormone made by the thyroid. This hormone doesn't actually DO anything in the body. When you need "action" from the hormone you convert it to liothyronine (aka T3.) This conversion requires the four substances previously stated. Keeping these levels adequate will help the treatments you're receiving be as effective as possible, and help you stay healthy and feel good!

Okay, I'm a geeky pharmacist. But I make sure ALL my own thyroid patients are keeping up with these levels, just like their TSH, free T3, and free T4 levels. This may be (and I hope it is) all stuff that they've already addressed with you, but in the USA many physicians aren't following these things, certainly not the standard of practice.

I think I just doubled my word count here on the outpost...

Looks like a deal to me! Figure somebody here may have interest- I'd probably hit it if I didn't find the Babicz uncomfortable!

Got it! They allow you to pay through Amazon, as well, so you get Amazon shipping costs instead of theirs. Instead of the $36 estimate it was $20! I'll let y'all know how it does!

I've started playing with a heavy rock to metal band, who are firm believers in volume as a weapon. I bought a Sunn Sonaro on encouragement from this forum, and will love you all forever for that!!! I've used a GK 700rbii, an SVT 4-pro, tc electronic BH 250, genz benz streamliner, and am currently using a Verellen Meatsmoke rack mount pre into a crown power amp, but the sunn is my favorite by far.

So I want something that hits that Sunn sound and feel, but that can safely push a 2 ohm load. Sorry if there is a painfully obvious way to get here, but I'm not very tech savvy. Any advice?

I've had a Babicz and found it really uncomfortable for palm muting playing pick style. It's the only bridge with which I've ever had this problem. Plus the 2 pieces are so much more elegant!

For the record my Babicz was on a Gretsch, so the model may have been different...

There are flashes of a ripper in this one:

And here's a grabber (maybe?):
