Gibson Basses / Re: EB-6 project
« on: February 12, 2013, 04:53:32 AM »
I'll post pics as soon as it arrives, takes some time to ship from nashville to good 'ol Norway, where I live.
This EB-0 looked very worn, finish looked like an air gun target - but no headstock crack.
I'll reinforce it with ebony, or maybe enlarge the whole headstock if i can't cram 6 hipshot ultralites into it.
But that's for my luthier to work out.. but the white finish will cover it up.

By the way, does anybody know the RAL code for the sixties polaris white?
Is it a universal colour name, or gibson only?

Oh, thanks - great info and quick reply..
To be honest, this will probably be a huge project, as it will be quite modified.
I do like the vibrato six string fender - thing, but cannot attach myself to fender like I do with gibsons.
It might sound strange, but most of my heroes are guitarists. This project is inspired by the
Allan Holdsworth era of soft machine. Allan played SG´s a lot back then, and he owned two or three
white SG customs, early ones with vibrato. So this EB-6 will turn out polaris white with ebony, block inlay fretboard
and gold hardware - aaaand , Bigsby vibrato. I hope. The fact that soft machine´s bass player uses a white fender six
makes me feel somewhat comfy with this project, crazy or not.

Is that a six string flatwound set i see on that bridge? I´m looking forward to meeting people whom which I can talk
to about short scale six string basses.... Imagine they are nice people...

Gibson Basses / EB-6 project
« on: February 11, 2013, 01:06:52 PM »
Oh, I just started a new project - EB-6.
Not buying, of course - too expensive and too hard to find.

Anybody here with some EB-6 (SG shape) experience?
I´ve read old threads, remember Uwe had one hanging around?

I´m basically building one for stage use - not collecting - just won an auction, a very worn EB-0 without parts (naked).

I guess I have the usual EB-6 questions;

- Are the pickups regular guitar PUP´s? Didn´t gibson call them ´full range pickups`?

- Just how big is the headstock?

- Is the bridge positioning / scale the same as on EB-3?

- I´ve heard the body is slightly thicker - wide, depth, thicker what?

Grateful for any comments, except the ´ are you really gonna use it ´ ones :)

Gibson Basses / Re: My ragdoll Epiphone ET-280 (pic intensive)

So... I had the new nut put on the bass. I was not at all happy with the "setup" job that they "threw in." The whole thing was under $40, so I am OK.
The truss rod still needed adjustment, so I did that... the bridge adjustment was not right, so the intonation was waaay off. Fixed that.
I went upstairs and plugged her in....

nothing on the treble pickup. no sound at all.

very quiet sound on the bass pickup.

I am not sure what is wrong, as I did test the pickups before assembly.

Any thoughts?

It´s true that the electronics are not the best, but the pickups sound fine when they work.
I´ve got the early Aria Diamond model 1820, which is the same instrument as the ET-280 with different
headstock. I was 16 years old (back in 1993) when I tried to upgrade it by changing the jack, pots and wires.
But the PUP´s was very weak after the ´mod´and as with yours one of them stopped working.

A while ago I picked it up again, and it was now obvious to me that my ´mod´had killed it.
The magnetic wire was destroyed by my soldering iron back then, and the non-working PUP was really falling apart and could not be saved. I re-wound the thin sounding neck PUP with .058 wire, really hot, and constructed a new bridge PUP , equally hot but on a taller bobbin to give it some treble response as well.
I completely shielded the cavities as well.

It´s not a high end instrument, and not really that easy to play - but it sounds like bass guitar sounds like
on good sixties pop recordings - nice and smooth round sound. Warm, but not muddy on a good tube amp.
I like it and was glad I gave it a second chance, it blends better than I thought even on recordings with a full band.

Not something I´d marry, but still a nice week-end lover....

at 1.56 it looks like he has a thunderbird pickup in the rear position of that eb3.or it might just be the video...

It certainly does - but my guess is that we´re fooled by the fact that the metal paint on the bridge pickup ring is not yet stripped off. If the pup also is flush with the ring, it sure looks like T bird pup. This instrument seems to be from the early side of the sixties, and they all came with the metal painted bridge pup surround.

Anyway, this is a really good looking bass, love that finish! I´d go monk for a while too, if I could get a hold of one with original polaris white finish.

Being an AC/DC fan, i also notice the guitar player´s jet firebird, at least it looks like it. Now, what about that fuzzy tone he´s got? After the intro he seems to flick a switch (!) on the guitar an turn the fuzz off. Maybe he´s just muting it.. Or maybe it was him that stole the fuzztone circuit on my ´63 EB0F. He sure looks capable of that sort of thing.

Thanks, I´ve been reading many of the gibson threads here - quite cheerful reading!
Made me feel like I´m normal after all.

Hope somebody´s got routing tips!

I´ll start a new fuzztone-thread when I feel ready, still a virgin here....

I´ve been looking for this too. I´m new here, and have just started repairing a `63 EB0F that has been modified with a Jazz pup. Slanted. Not looking good at all. I have to put in a bridge mini humbucker and keep the handrest on, to hide this mod...
