Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / nuts..
« on: November 24, 2013, 03:34:39 AM »
Does anybody here know a good source for gibson bone bass nut blanks?

Most blanks i can find is no more than 6mm wide. I need 8mm for a ´67 eb0 project.
Apparently, those who part out basses now also takes the nut off.

It is only a matter of time before the dot inlays go too....

Gibson Basses / Decal logo on EB0.. what year?
« on: August 21, 2013, 05:54:35 AM »
Some of you must have noticed an EB0 project bass on ebay, white with bare wood neck, listed as a 1959 model.
I asked the seller if there was a serial number, pointing out that there was no sg shaped EB0's in 1959, but the answer was just
plain and simple, 'no'. I think it's been around for a while, but it's still relisted as a '59 and the seller's got good feedback.
I do like the early necks, so I'm somewhat interested. I dont think it's fake (though not a '59), the neck heel is early 60's correct,
but I noticed it has a gold decal logo.

Does anybody know how to date by decal vs. pearl insert logo's on early gibsons?
I checked out Jules sites but the 'logo' section was still under construction..

Bass Amps & Effects / Marshall super bass 100.. price?
« on: August 09, 2013, 09:23:31 AM »
As an amp builder and repairer I rarely have the money to buy expensive vintage amps, but what about this:

Went across the country with my wife for a wedding (yes, I was forced) and I even had to go shopping for
some new shoes (forced here too). To my surprise this town had a decent guitar shop.

Not much to look at for a bass player, a couple of cheap p-copies and an Ibanez.
Hey, wait - In a corner - a 100w marshall super bass top.
Probably very early 70's, nice cabinet but rusty trafos and f***ed up wiring- but hey -that's what I do, right?
For sale, naah.. maybe if a really good offer came up.

What do you guys think? I really can't see myself leaving town without it.
It needs all trannies, capacitors, most wiring and probably sockets and pots... but fine cab/tolex.

How much should I punish my mastercard, any experienced buyers here?
Haven't really seen many for sale, or maybe I haven't looked for them..

My recently aquired love for this amp is about to overshadow my wallet - need help!
I promised my better half that I could really make some money if I fixed it up and sold it,
but of course I wouldn't sell it. (she knows)

Any input here?

I recently boght 4 low impedance pickups for repair on ebay. (maybe one of you guys in here?)
The seller claimed these were used picups from les paul recoring basses, but it did seem strange to have that many
broken low impedance pickups  - as they rarely break open in the epoxy.

I know they are hard to repair, but iI have the tools for it and wind a lot of pickups. I found many interesting threads
and links here on the outpost, an did some extended research on their design.
When they arrived, I got two pleasant surprises.

1. They were new (or NOS, if you like)

2. Two of them were working, reading 10,5 ohms wich I believe is correct.

I contacted the seller, who informed me that they came from an ex gibson employee. That makes sense,
the two working units might have been rejected at the factory because there is some minor cosmetic flaws on them.

Now, I still wonder: There is only two wires on them - I've seen pictures of four wires here. So what is correct?
I have a brown and a red wire. Were the pups different on the recording bass and the triumph bass?
Any extended knowledge on this issue will be greatly appreciated. I'll post som pictures if needed.

Gibson Basses / EB-6 project
« on: February 11, 2013, 01:06:52 PM »
Oh, I just started a new project - EB-6.
Not buying, of course - too expensive and too hard to find.

Anybody here with some EB-6 (SG shape) experience?
I´ve read old threads, remember Uwe had one hanging around?

I´m basically building one for stage use - not collecting - just won an auction, a very worn EB-0 without parts (naked).

I guess I have the usual EB-6 questions;

- Are the pickups regular guitar PUP´s? Didn´t gibson call them ´full range pickups`?

- Just how big is the headstock?

- Is the bridge positioning / scale the same as on EB-3?

- I´ve heard the body is slightly thicker - wide, depth, thicker what?

Grateful for any comments, except the ´ are you really gonna use it ´ ones :)
