Gibson Basses / Nice '62 EB3 on the bay
« on: August 11, 2016, 10:56:14 PM »
This one looks fine, rare to see a good one this old listed as 'EB-0'

If it does not skyrocket in the last minute it might be a good investment!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Pickup parts
« on: March 29, 2016, 02:16:35 PM »
I seem to get more and more pickup work these days... Lots of US suppliers have pickup parts, but none of whom I have done business with before.

Does anybody here have experience with companies like ´tone-kraft´or mojo tone?

Other Bass Brands / NBD : ´63 Gretsch 6070
« on: September 30, 2015, 07:26:30 AM »
Just in!
Nice bass, fantastic hollowbody sound... The neck is a huge log, though.
Killer looks for sure. So now I´m in the Gretsch club, too.
Had to let a ´67 EB3 go to get this one.

Gibson Basses / Such beauty... EB-6 content
« on: June 02, 2015, 12:46:13 AM »
Anybody seen this before?

Ok, so I love EB-6 both sg and es shape. But this is just too beautiful! I usually never lust for things out of my price range, like first year EB-3's and EB-6's in general. But this is too much, couldn't sleep last night! It's soooooo nice!

Bass Amps & Effects / Vox V100 schematics
« on: January 06, 2015, 07:08:53 AM »
Got a 1970 V100 in for service just now. Went through my files and drew a blank. Anybody here got schematics for this one?
I'll be restoring some burnt PCB here, otherwise it's a simple six tube 100w design. Oh, nothing at Google's either by the way.

Ok, got a project now that is somewhat beyond my skills, but fun nevertheless!

WARNING: a lot of text, sorry.. I got carried away :)

A while back (years?) I requested some info on the EB6 (sg shape), because I was buying an EB0 I´d convert to six strings. It´s a looooong story, but I am now in the luthier´s landscape - a dangerous place. Woodworking, glueing...
all done without my beloved soldering iron!

First, I jumped onto a bargain ebay EB0 - my first shortscale gibson. However, it turned out to be a ´63 fuzztone.
The seller, a Denmark street vintage shop(!) claimed that the unoriginal pickguard was there to hide other unoriginal mods/routings. Needless to say, I didn´t have the heart to chop it up, so I put it together as close to original as possible.

Second, I bought another 60´s EB0, this time a body husk only. When it arrived, I noticed the skinny (1967) neck.
No way to put six strings onto that nut! So it became the fretless LoZ project (which I have posted here).

Then finally I bought a beat up (but complete) 1965 EB0, wide neck and ready to go!

My dream project: EB6 in polaris white with gold hardware; ultralite tuners, schaller roller and a bigsby!
This might not sound like a lot of work, but I met some dilemmas. For starters, I decided to complete it structurally
before finishing it, to make sure I was comfy with the layout. Well, I fitted (modded) a 70´s gibson/bigsby vibrato,
bought a set of (expensive) hipshots (wrong size-1/2") >:( and wound a couple of tall bobbin humbuckers.
The problem is, in the end it played so well and sounded so good it ended up being my main axe.
And the worn cherry finish looks so good, except it does not match the gold hardware at all!

So when I saw this really hacked up 65 EB0 on a recent auction, I got it - and yeah, HACKED up!
Finally something bad enough to refin. This will be the white EB6 with gold HW, the red one I have already collected nickel hardware for (including 3/8" ultralites with small clovers)
Actually, the ´usual neck repair´as the seller called it, was a medium scale 3 piece maple neck cut down (truss rod sticking out) , bolted on, and with the original fretboard AND MOP decals/serial glued onto it. Headstock shaped with
plastic metal and painted black. Never seen ANYTHING worse. I´m just glad he didn´t glue the neck on.

Ok, it´s a long shot - but I hope to make it play. Got a luthier to carve a maho shortscale neck, and I have now prepped everything to bare wood. I´ll post pictures when I get things more together, BUT:

TO THE POINT:
Glue seems to be up for discussion. (like oil and sparkplugs at mc foras) Got a bottle of (dare I say it) liquid hide glue, but apparently many luthiers hate this. I glued the trussrod filler strip with this, seems to be ok, but should I not use it for glueing the fingerboard to the neck?
My ´guitar repair book´recommends fresh hide glue (never used it) or regular titebond (not available nearby)
What do you guys think?

Bass Amps & Effects / Gibson bass amp?
« on: September 30, 2014, 12:57:48 AM »
It's interesting that searching for postings here on Gibson amps give me no results, does anyone here own or use a Gibson bass amp?
I understand they were not very common after Fender took off, and in Europe even the guitar amps are non existent.
I've read a couple of comments from the les paul amp for lo-z, but I'm talking about the regular bass amps.

The reason I'm asking, is because I'm about to build a clone of the GA-100 35W bass amp. I have quite a few oddball radio tubes in stock,
and not many restore radio's these days. They are removing the last few FM antennas over here in 2017.

I discovered, as i was reading tube datasheets the other night, that I had European equvivalents to the compressor (2x6FM8) and the drivers (2x6BD6) as well as a couple of boxes with 6EU7's. I also found a 40w hi-fi output transformer for 6L6GC's, so why not jump into
another amp project?

Anyone ever enjoyed a GA100 moment?

Anybody know where the musicman forum is now? I searched for it, but only find links to the old pages wich now only works as an archive. The page is referring to a 'new forum' but there is no links. Anybody?

Gibson Basses / ebay gibsons
« on: February 19, 2014, 02:25:08 AM »
These look nice, collectors story on the EB-0 too. And not threatingly priced?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1968-Gibson-EB-3-Bass-Guitar-/171245208162?pt=Guitar&hash=item27df028262

EB-0 listed as 1964, but it's older... Tempting!

Bass Amps & Effects / Marshall Bass 4x12
« on: January 26, 2014, 07:26:49 AM »
As mentioned somewhere else, I´ve been looking for a 4x12 for my ´73 Superbass head.
I have more or less given up hope of finding an empty vintage cab locally, the plan was to find a cab from the late 60 - mid 70´s and put in decent bass speakers.

A 1960TV (the big one..) , 2013 model popped up on a local net auction now. It has 25w greenbacks, which I can use for my guitar amps.

The question for you folks; what is the weight of old cabs compared to new ones?

The new are really decently priced, and I guess they sound the same as the old except for the speakers.
Any comments on old vs new cabs?

The Bass Zone / double bass
« on: January 12, 2014, 11:27:03 AM »
Went to see Hawkwind yesterday didn´t know they were still touring! Havent looked either, but I do like the early to mid 70´s period. Nice bass content to, for most of the show they used two basses , a P and a T bird. Sounded nice together.
Surprised me too that a Dano 6 string bass was used on some songs.

Good show, fantastic sound and visual effects as well, thumbs up for hawk!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Gibson EB-0 Lo Z Christmas project
« on: December 12, 2013, 11:59:02 AM »
At last, my first Lo Z project. Mentioned before in Lo Z threads, this is a straight one pickup EB-0 project, and
the ´core´is a nice 1967 body bought naked on ebay recently. It is really a combined project, it all started when I bought
a set of Lo Z pups (4) listed as ´gibson bass recording pickups not working´. It turned out to be guitar (les paul) pickups, but two of them were in perfect working order! The ´strongest´of them read 15dc ohms, but had a broken ear. The other working unit had some epoxy smear underneath. The other two looked perfect, but had open coils. Researched a bit, and found them all to be ex-gibson employee stuff- but the previous owner thought they were all broken and sold them cheap.
It will be fun to install NOS pickups, I´ll be the first to wear the black plastic..

After getting really comfy with EB0/3 basses from the 60´s, I noticed some difficulties playing my Fender P fretless.
This would be a good excuse to buy yet another project, but space is becoming a problem. So i will combine the two projects, I can always refret if I don´t like my LoZ fretless.

Well, the body arrived, and it was not as good looking as it seemed to be on ebay, but it was cheap. On the other hand, unbroken headstock and solid neck/body joint. It was sanded down at some point and clearcoated, seems to be floor laquer painted on with a too big brush. Same with the fretboard, it had a thick smear of laquer, painted over a well used and incredibly dirty piece of rosewood! The frets almost fell of the instrument.

I top mounted the pup on my ´67 EB-3, and spent an evening looking for the sweet spot. My sweet spot, that is,
and it ended up somewhere between the neck pup and the handrest.

So I needed to fill the mudbucker/neck wire routing, and all screwholes. I´m going for my first polaris white gibson, and
for the first time I´m going to follow all necessary steps to get a decent finish..

Here it is:
