Oh, I really like that! Bit like an over-ecstatic Chrissie Hynde. And it's always nice to hear a chick play solos who does not sound like a man while doing it.

I read that she has been playing guitar for quite a while.  As for Chrissie Hynde, I liked her okay.  But I would prefer more of a rock voice like the April Art singer for this Nashville band.  Anyway, considering that Nashville is so competitive, this Gloom Girl MFG seems to be doing well.  In Nashville it seems that rock is more underground and is even geared more toward young people than most other places.  Even though I could, I doubt seriously I would go to a Gloom Girl concert.  Definitely wouldn't fit in.  Besides, like I said, the music is probably a little too post-punk for me anyway.

This is a band which seems to be achieving some local success at small venues.  Still, I didn't even know about them until I saw this video with a Gibson bass.  They're a little too post-punk pop rock for my taste.  But I genuinely wish them success and maybe they will get it, too.

Well I don't know.  Lennon Murphy got sued by Yoko Ono 15+ years ago for using her own name.  But the U.S Trademark Board dismissed the petition.  Kurt Loder promoted Murphy for a while on MTV.  As far as I know, her career never really took off.  A number of years ago, she did play a gig near here which I thought about going to.  If you get booked here, it's a given that either you're unknown or your career is already seriously in peril.

Sheesh, what a tough crowd.

Speaking of Florida, I ran across this unusual story about fish behavior in the Florida Keys yesterday.

At least reptiles kept as pets are harmless.

Colorado man died from pet Gila monster’s venomous bite, autopsy shows

That's comforting to know.  You can be BFF with your pet Gila monster.  Or maybe not.  I've never understood why some people are convinced they have some kind of mystical, animal whisperer connection with wild animals.  No thanks.  I'm perfectly willing to pass on that.

I've never cared much for this song myself, but it was Eric Carmen's first hit after leaving the Raspberries.

Like I was saying earlier, although familiar with their songs, I believe a lot of people didn't know the name of the band.  Certainly not the names of band members, either.  According to this interview I just found, Eric Carmen claimed the Raspberries appealed to an unusual demographic.

Rick also had the benefit of Neil Giraldo working with him.

I'm sure it was a big help.  BTW, good article.

It's my impression that a lot of people in the U.S. were familiar with songs by the Raspberries, but didn't even know the name of the band.  Badfinger, on the other hand, seemed to be taken more seriously.  Maybe because of their association with the Beatles.

I'd say that Rick Springfield, among others, probably heard him a lot!

With one difference being that Rick Springfield was quite a chick magnet.  He didn't just have the pop singer image, but also the soap opera thing going on.  I think it was just too much for a lot of women to resist.  I can remember being around women several times talking about him.  They wanted to rip his clothes off as well as their own.  I'm sure Eric Carmen must have had a positive reaction, too.  I just don't know very much about him.

Criticized by some for being too pop, he was still able to deliver the goods time after time.  Knowing that a song like this could get controversial, he managed to avoid the issue by offering the song from the girl's perspective.

I never understood why "compromise" all of the sudden had to become a four-letter-word. If you don't want policies to be arbitrarily yanked forward and backward, it's the way to go.

I've never quite been able to grasp why so many people end up allowing their emotions to completely overwhelm them when it comes to politics, either.  It's like they let primal urges going back to the cavemen take over.  If we acted toward everything the way we tend to act toward politics, we would, in fact, still be cavemen.

Whether a political measure is right or wrong is something that can often only be decided by historians decades later. But hardly anyone seems to think long term anymore, it's all short term gratification and perspective.

And political debate to me is in its purest form just an attempt of people trying to get along, exchange ideas and maybe arrive at a compromise. It doesn't need to descend into tribalism - considering it possible that the guy holding an opposing view might perhaps be correct or at least have a less than evil motivation for his/her opinion is a first step. Most of life takes place in the middle, not at the fringes.

There is a name for the absence of political debate, it's called dictatorship.

Unfortunately, in the U.S. and other places as well, political debate has descended into tribalism.  I'm so weary of hearing "I'm right, you're wrong.  Case closed, go to hell."  It would be impossible to have something similar to the Constitutional Convention now.  That would require compromise.  You can forget about compromise.  It has become something unknown--at least in the U.S.  As for dictatorship, that's always a possibility.  When people are so ignorant of the past they don't even know what a dictatorship means, that makes them vulnerable, needless to say.  All I can say is try living in the U.S. for a few years and see just how bad the political polarization has become.  The only thing comparable would be the 1850s/1860s.  BTW, how do people in real life view me that I sometimes go into detail with?  In general, conservatives view me as a liberal and liberals view me as a conservative.  Anyway, that's all I have to say.  If Dave wants to ban me for life now, that might make sense and I'm not even joking.
