Gibson Basses / Trading for a Gibson
« on: November 14, 2014, 01:17:45 PM »
So I have this late-70's Fender P that I want to sell/trade. The body is stripped to natural, some replacement parts (pickguard, bridge), but not butchered or hacked. It's a decent bass but I have better Fenders. Someone in a local board is offering a Gibson Grabber for trade. It's a natural finish bass and looks original. I am thinking of offering him my P for the Grabber+cash. How much $$ is fair to ask in such a trade? Thanks

Other Bass Brands / What are the odds of this happening
« on: November 01, 2014, 08:45:31 AM »
So I'm watching and Colin Bass is playing this beautiful late-70's black Wal Pro. And I'm thinking, I haven't seen one of these for sale in ages. If I wanted one, I'd probably be very frustrated.

An hour later I'm checking eBay and I do a Wal bass search.

There is one just like Colin's. What are the odds?

Then I read the text.

It's Colin's bass!

Fender Basses / Fender's current tort material: finally they nailed it
« on: October 17, 2014, 01:48:48 AM »
Recently bought (from Angela Instruments) a Fender '62 spec P pickguard. After too many decades of wrong and sometimes hideous tort, Fender have finally nailed it. It's really close to the old guards. The top layer is nitrocellulose.

A nice bonus is the 30-degree "vintage bevel" - compared to 45-degree on all others, and much prettier.

Today is the anniversary of Jimi Hendrix's death, 44 years ago.

Here is Jimi on upside-down righty bass, with Robert Wyatt. No rehearsals - this was his first and only take.

Other Bass Brands / 1937 Regal Bassoguitar on eBay
« on: September 14, 2014, 02:16:38 PM »
At the same time that Paul Tutmarc invented the electric bass guitar, Regal developed the acoustic guitar-like bass.

This could be louder than an Ernie Ball Earthwood ABG.

It's giant. And uses upright gut strings. $4.5K BIN.

It will make you look 3 foot tall  ;D

This is Israel Crosby with Fletcher Henderson's orchestra.

I have one exactly like this - wonderful basses, highly recommended. IMHO way better than 500/1's.

The Bass Zone / Darryl Jones
« on: June 04, 2014, 04:07:55 PM »
Just came back home from my first Stones concert. I remembered Darryl Jones as a diehard J bass man, from his days with Miles and his signature Lakland, right? But he didn't use a single J or J clone. There were two P's, some great-sounding custom bass that had a soapbar in the P location, a hollowbody Kay reissue, and a short scale Fender Mustang bass. Do we have a convert?

GC catalog has a LE of 50 4001S Special basses in matte Mapleglo. Price is $3,400.

It's essentially a 4001v63 with a satin finish over a really nice flamed maple body, and a wrong (rounded) heel shape.

Looks real nice. A great product if you have removed the handrest or horseshoes.

No affil.

Guitars Etc. / '83 SQ Tele
« on: May 20, 2014, 12:50:32 PM »
Recently got this one for $510. First non-Gibson electric 6-string in 20+ years for me. Sounds and plays like a dream. Intonates perfectly even with its 3-saddle bridge. Has a real grey bottom bridge pickup.

It's a late-83 SQ series. The first ones made in Japan (82-83) were JV series, 57 and 62 reissues. Then in late '83-84 came the SQ series, basically a 70's reissue. Not as collectible as low-serial JV's but still desirable to some.

I'm in love with this guitar.
