« on: January 29, 2011, 11:08:48 PM »
I'm not affiliated in any way...but this could be the real deal and with only 19 hrs left I thought someone here might need this. The same seller's got a mudbucker for sale as well and it looks legit...although I could be wrong...dm

Aren't you going to take it back to Mike? After all, he checked out the electronics and told you they were in excellent shape.

Denis, glad that all is well with the 76. I love the neck on my MapleGlow 76, one of the nicest feeling necks of any bass I own. Does yours still have the mute/foam...that's kind of fun to play around with for that McCartney sound. ...and did it have the .0047 cap bypassed?
All you needed was a neck tweek and a new pup. I think you got a pretty good deal. ENJOY!! David

507 according to this page:

http://www.flyguitars.com/epiphone/bass/EmbassyShippingFigures.php

Thanks, I stand corrected...I had put a small embassy note in my gibson shipping totals book next to the sb 232 which now, obviously, was a reference for a friend of mine with some old epi solid body guitars. They did make an embassy guitar didn't they?

But, The gibson totals book does have 11 ebdl's shipped in 1970 which are not listed on the fly site. So if this is correct then there were actually 518.

Here's a link to the rick forum "anatomy of a bass" thread describing the old style truss rods adjustment procedure. If you follow the guide you can easily adjust and tweek them yourself.

If I got the info right, only about 500 USA Embassys were ever made

More like 227 were shipped according to the shipping totals book:
SB 232- 149 from 61-70
SB232ch- 78 for the same years
...rarer'n hens' teeth
Great job on bridge swap.

Bass Amps & Effects / Trace Elliot schematics?
« on: February 22, 2010, 01:43:53 PM »
Hello all, this is my first post in the amps forum and I'm looking for some help. I need the schematics for my British made Trace Elliot Commando 1001 head. It's a seperate unit and not in a combo but from what I can tell, it's the same amp as in the Commando 112 and 115 combos. I've tried emailing Trace Elliot but the email address from thier site is for Peavy in Meridian Miss and I haven't received a reply. If anyone can tell me where I might find this schematic I'd really appreciate it. Thanks David

"Would you point the bass-cap out for me, please?"
The .0047 cap is the LITTLE light yellow cap kind of under the larger light yellow .047 caps. I believe it runs from the 2nd pot to the switch. Go to the rick forum or Joey's bass notes to find out how to do the bypass. It's pretty easy and well worth the mod in my opinion.
I believe that this tiny cap has been responsible for the majority of pickup swaps on the older rick basses. Most players just didn't know why their rickenbacker sound was so anemic compared to their p/jazz basses and lots of folks switched out the pups to try and get that fuller sound.
Many players love the cap in place but personally I love the cap bypassed. A few years ago I got my 4005 and the cap was in place. To me it was kind of a plink-plunk bass sound...when I removed the cap WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! I never ran a preamp though, and perphaps it would have sounded much better through one. My 76 already had the cap removed and I love the sound of that bass, and it has one of the nicest feeling necks of any bass I own. Great deal on a great bass!!

Fender Basses / Re: will the bridge cover for P and J bass fit my Jaguar?
« on: January 29, 2010, 08:51:41 PM »
I don't own a Jaguar, but from the ones I've seen on ebay, the bridge looks the same as the Precision and Jazz. Therefore I would imagine that either the later p ashtray would work and even the early p ashtray/telecaster bass ashtray would fit. And, if the guys' j tray in the youtube fit, then it makes sense that a standard P tray would fit as well. To be sure, you should ask someone on ebay that's selling them for specific inside measurements.

Rickenbacker Basses / Re: Some Ric Porn for you: 4003S/5 and 4003S/8
« on: January 27, 2010, 10:22:19 PM »
Uwe, I have read on other forums of at least a few other people with 4003s8's with the exact same problem. But, there are also many owners with no issues at all.
Since my 87 was in almost mint condition when I got it in or around 2001, (and I got it from a local, small, vintage music store), there is the possibility that it was sent back to rick by the original owner and they did the mods. Or, maybe it didn't develope the bow until after the warrenty had expired.
I asked John Hall once about the imbedded bridge assembly and he replied that that did not sound like anything that they would have done at the factory. But, I recently read somewhere that some of the model 4008's were shipped from the factory with the lowered (imbedded) bridge assembly. I have never seen a close up picture of one, and I can't remember where I read that...maybe the rick forum. Whomever did the bridge rout on my bass did a very clean job and if you didn't look closely you'd never know that it's not stock.
I agree that rick certainly should have done more research before sending these out...perhaps a wider/thicker neck, larger rods, graphite re-inforcement and an 8 saddle bridge would not have been too terribly hard to implement.
I am really happy with the results and even though I play in a blues band these days I still think I'll take it to a rehersal just to hear it with a full band.
The last time I played it live was with an Americana/rock band and we had my rick 4003s8, a Burns double 6 electric guitar, an electrified/acoustic slide mandoline, and a jerry jones electric sitar! There were a LOT of strings on stage that night!!! cheers, David

Rickenbacker Basses / 4003S/8 truss rod update
« on: January 10, 2010, 09:51:55 AM »
Hello all and hope your having a great new year. I thought I'd post an update to my earlier 4003s8 truss rod issue. Over the holidays I had a chance to work on my bass. This first picture shows the string heighth with full 8 string tension before the truss rods replacement. (sorry for the lousy pic but you can still see the problem) the gap was a good 3/16"+ and the neck had a substantial bow.

This second picture shows the older rods. Much to my surprise they were already 3/16" rods that the previous owner had installed, although they used the original acorn nuts and coupling nuts so the rod had been threaded to the older, smaller size...also, the coupling nuts had been cut down to about half of their length.

This third pic shows where the previous owner had inset the bridge to try and lower the action.

I bought 2- 3/16" rods from lowes and the acorn and coupling nuts from ace and made the new rods using a 10-24(3/16") die to thread the rods and then installed the new rods...total cost, about $15 including the rods, nuts, washers, die and a new nut driver.

Now, I'm slowly adjusting the neck but it is almost perfectly flat and the action is within a 1/16" off of the fretboard. I might even have to raise the bridge a tad. Here is a picture of my s8 with her Rickenbacker sisters, a 66 4005 and a 76 4001

Thanks to everyone for their input and I'll be able to play this bass again. A special thanks to Uwe and Dave. Uwe for his great info and Dave for the suggestion to not re-thread to the original specs. Cheers and a great New Year to everyone! David

Gibson Basses / Re: 60's Black EB-2?

"Was it ever decided exactly how many were made? 30? 40?
I've got the gibson shipping records  and they list 101 as the number shipped from 61-70.   33-61, 20-62, 10-63, 24-64, 12-65, and 2 in 67. I'm not sure but I believe the sg/ebo shaped body was only made in 61 and after that it was the eb2 shape. They do not list any in their 48-60 records or in their 71-79 records.
