Gibson Basses / my visit at GC
« on: August 16, 2012, 08:28:03 PM »
I had some time to kill so I decided to stop at Guitar Center.  sometimes they'll have an SG bass and/or a Tbird, but tonight was different.  2 SGs, 2 Flyin Vs (one satin finish, one gloss), an Explorer and the RD reissue. couldn't find a cable to plug in with, so I noodled a bit and then took crappy phone pics.  I haven't seen that many Gibson basses in stock around here since the 70s at Chuck Levin's.  the SGs look tiny!

The Outpost Cafe / The Eggmen....
« on: January 25, 2011, 07:44:08 PM »
got a mention in Vintage Guitar (February 2011).  8)   they run a column every month featuring comments from their Facebook page and the topic for Feburary is 'your favorite band name & why'.  "A local Beatles tribute band called The Eggmen.  I think it's one of the greatest names for a Beatles tribute."    pretty cool!

Gibson Basses / another Christmas bird
« on: January 09, 2010, 12:08:07 PM »
I wanted to post this earlier but didn't have time to take the required pics  ;)
my lovely wife asked for a few ideas for Christmas gifts and at the end of my list, I jokingly put an ad for a Epi Tbird Pro IV with no expectations of her buying it.  anyway, after the family finished exchanging gifts, we sat down for our tradional Christmas breakfast of french toast, eggs and sausage.  after breakfast we went to sit around the tree but as we left the kitchen, my daughter distracted me while my son ran upstairs.  when we made it to the living room, there was the bird propped up against one of the chairs!  to say the least, I was shocked and was speachless.  I felt sort of guilty getting this gift but after playing it for awhile, I decided it was ok ;D
it needed a setup but that's par for the course.  I had played a few at guitar center and was impressed with the build and overall quality.  not as nice as a gibson but much better than I expected.  it's tone can ranges from psuedo-mud to extremely bright.  I asked gibson about the preamp specs, but haven't heard anything yet, although they did say the pickups were a 'new special design' ;D.  so far I've only played it at home and I'm curious to see how it does in a band setting.  it's a fairly nice bass and as Uwe mentioned in another thread, the upper fret access is just fine.  my son likes to play jazz chords and uses frets 12-16 all the time and he was able to do his thing with ease.

« on: December 03, 2009, 05:56:12 AM »
I was in Borders last night and saw these greatest hits cds.  it struck me as a little odd that our beloved Gibson basses were featured but it also made me a bit giddy.  :-[   I wanted to buy them just for the covers.

The Outpost Cafe / which mic for what?
« on: March 25, 2009, 07:55:16 PM »
I bought an audio interface and I'm starting to record at home.  I've been fooling with digital audio for awhile but haven't done much recording on the pc.  I'm finding that my sm-57 is pretty decent for some things (amps & vocals), it's not very good at others.  I'm curious as to what types of mics are typically used for recording acoustic guitar or upright bass.  I've been googling all kinds of stuff but you know how message boards can be and there's always good advice here, so I hope you guys won't mind sharing your knowledge and experience.  thanks very much!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / pickup repair question
« on: March 06, 2009, 05:47:48 AM »
the height adjustment tabs for the triumph pup I just got were damaged during shipping and I'm wondering if anybody has had a similar experience.  could the tabs be re-attached to the cover using epoxy or superglue?  the seller told me they might have another cover, but since the pup is potted in epoxy, is replacing the cover a viable option?  here's some pics of the damage.

thanks!

Gibson Basses / triumph pickup help
« on: March 04, 2009, 04:20:18 PM »
I'm wondering if anybody here knows how to measure the dc resistance for the different coils.  there are two sets of four wires coming out of each end of the pickup (brown, green, blue & red) and I'm not sure how to pair them to be able to measure the dcr.  ???    any help would be appreciated!  :-*    I just got the pickup from ebay and I'm trying to determine if all of the coils are working.

one more request, does anybody have the schematic for the triumph?  I looked on Jules' site but couldn't find it  :P

many thanks!

Gibson Basses / anybody need a choke?
« on: May 22, 2008, 04:38:30 AM »
I rewired my ripper a while back and did not use the choke in the new harness.   I thought somebody here might need one...any takers?   I'm not asking for $$ but could use a couple of spacers for a bridge cover and a D string tuner for my triumph (see pic).  doesn't have to be an even swap, we can work something out to make everybody happy.
