Bass Amps & Effects / Reeves C225 developed a problem
« on: September 21, 2018, 02:34:55 PM »
I gigged 4 times with the amp and no problems. Last gig after 2 songs in, I got a nasty crackling when I played hard. I doesn't sound like a typical distortion, more like a blown speaker. It is not the speaker, any of the preamp tubes ( I swapped them out 1 at a time).  Acts the same with active or passive, 3 DIFFERENT CABS, 4 & 8 Ohm.  I brought it to the local tube guru and when he tested it, the problem did not occur with him. ( I think he has only guitar stuff).Power tubes are OK. Resistors checked OK.

I'm at a  real loss here.   So discouraged!

Bass Amps & Effects / Mesa OUT, Reeves IN............
« on: June 15, 2018, 10:23:49 PM »
I really tried to love the Mesa 400+, changing pre tubes, speaker cabs, EQ settings.  I just couldn't get the baked in mid range out-- or should I say, lack of lows in.  I kept going back to my SS Ashdown or GK800RB.   I have always been in love with my Sunn 2000S but it is 30" wide making it way too goofy for top of cab use.  That's one reason I went for the Mesa-   the profile.    I had a chance on a DR201, but it was not an original and I got cold feet.... plus it's 27.5" long and 75 lbs.  So a minty used Reeves C225 came up and I grabbed it.   Now the wait for FEDEX....
This thing is supposed to "have it all" from what I have read.  And it's 59 lbs and 24" wide to fit most standard cabs.
The guy said it has  TAD KT88 tubes in it.   I think they were swapped out.  I think Reeves shipps with JJs.  It was bought in 2015 so maybe that's what was around then??  Don't know.

Bass Amps & Effects / Preamp not working after shipping. Mesa 400+
« on: April 06, 2018, 04:55:47 PM »
I ended up selling my Mesa 400+ on ebay. I found an excellent double box. It got there in iin 1 1/2 days with no damage to the box. The power tubes light up but the preamp tubes don't.  What course of action should I take.  Should I have him ship it back?  The amp worked flawlessly when it left here.

Thank You,  Bob

Bass Amps & Effects / Adding an 8ohm tweeter box to a 4 ohm 215
« on: July 06, 2017, 03:15:15 AM »
So I am pretty sold on keeping my Berg NV215 but I want to add some highs.

I ran it before with a biamp GK800RB, which has a separate tweeter amp.

Experimenting, for 10 minutes, I ran another 215 (4ohm) cab with my Sun 2000S off the optional 4 ohm tap instead of the 16 (The brown wire that comes from the OT), then I plugged a medium size Klipsch center channel speaker (2x4"+horn) (8ohms) out of the 215's cab parallel jacks.

The sound was very balanced between the 2 cabs. Since the Klipsch rolls off high, there was no distortion. Just more presence.

A lot of 4 ohm cabs have tweeter/mid/ etc speakers included in them (Including the Berg has a 6"), so that makes me wonder if it really changes the total impedance of the total load.

Is it safe to run this cab on a tube amp this way, namely in my Mesa 400+?
